Summary
The Surgical Technician prepares supplies, equipment, and instrumentation for each surgery performed in the Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) and assists the physician with maintaining the sterile field and all supplies for each surgery.
Responsibilities- Open surgical supplies and set up the sterile field, maintaining aseptic technique and identifying any break in sterile technique.
- Anticipate the surgeon’s needs and request appropriate supplies prior to immediate need.
- Update surgeon preference cards as needed.
- Report missing or malfunctioning equipment and instruments to the OR Manager in a timely manner.
- Operate equipment required to perform the job safely and efficiently.
- Perform sharp and sponge counts with the RN or Circulator according to policy.
- Dispose of sharps and hazardous materials according to policy and utilize PPE.
- Wash and reprocess instrumentation according to established standards and ASC policy.
- Organize the storage area for instruments and supplies under the direction of the OR Manager.
- Label medication on the sterile field, account for and verify amounts, reporting totals to both the surgeon and anesthesiologist.
- Maintain knowledge of commonly used local anesthetics, antibiotics, and topical hemostats.
- Assist OR staff as directed with physician orders according to patient needs.
- Assist in initial OR set up, including wiping down all flat surfaces and initial decontamination room set up.
- Clean the OR with appropriate disinfecting agents.
- Assist the Nurse Manager in maintaining supply inventory.
- Assist in end‑of‑day clean‑up procedures.
- Participate in staff meetings and in‑services, accurately maintaining education file.
- This position is in office; remote is not available.
- Other duties as assigned.
Completion of an accredited Surgical Technician program and one year of experience as a Surgical Technician preferred. Ophthalmology experience strongly preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, RegistrationsCurrent BCLS certification required or must be obtained within the first 60 days of employment. Surgical Technician certification is strongly preferred.
Supervisory ResponsibilityThis position has no supervisory responsibility.

Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction; ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and discriminate sounds. - Computer use:
Using a computer to collect and disseminate information, research issues, and process information.
- Medium work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects. - Close vision:
Clear vision at 20 inches or less. - Distance vision:
Clear vision at 20 feet or more. - Color vision:
Ability to identify and distinguish colors. - Peripheral vision:
Ability to observe an area seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point. - Depth perception:
