Join the City of Plano Building Inspections Department and play a key role in shaping the future of our community as a Plans Examiner. This is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of several high profile and innovative construction projects that will define the city's growth. The City of Plano Building Inspections Department will be receiving several high profile and exciting new construction projects for review.

As a Commercial Plans Examiner, you will review plans, provide comments, and collaborate with developers and contractors to move projects toward approval and construction. This role requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to analyze complex plans, identify code issues, and research solutions that help advance projects efficiently.

The Building Inspections Department supports professional growth and will cover the cost of required certifications upon successful completion. This position also offers flexible scheduling options, including four ten hour workdays, a four day schedule with one half day, or a traditional five day workweek.

Examples of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Reviews commercial and residential plan for compliance with adopted building codes and City ordinances.
  • Approves permit applications as appropriate, coordinates approvals for projects with other City departments.
  • Provides code consultation to engineers, architects, designers, contractors, developers, and citizens.
  • Performs on-call customer service duties; processes over the counter permits.
  • Recommends code changes and departmental procedure changes to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Attends various meetings.
  • Maintains professional certifications by attending classes and seminars.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.
Marginal Duties:
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Typical Decisions : The incumbent is responsible for interpreting City codes. The incumbent determines when plans and permits are within or outside of City and building codes.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of: Applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations regarding the building industry; terms, symbols and techniques used by architects, engineers, and designers in construction plans and specifications; data and format requirements for plats, maps, and diagrams; engineering design principles and techniques; architectural design principles and techniques.

Skill in: Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing; operating a personal computer including word processing, spreadsheet, and design software; reading, interpreting, and explaining complex code and ordinance requirements; measuring and scaling plans; demonstrating problem solving abilities; interacting tactfully with the public and City staff.

Education: Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction, or related field.

Experience: Three (3) years of experience in residential or commercial plan review and code interpretation.

Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above

Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

Licenses and Certifications: International Code Council Building Plans Examiner certification or ability to obtain within one year of employment.

Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions : This is primarily an office classification although standing in work areas and walking between work areas may be required.
