Job Summary
The Design Manager is the face of the design department to external clients/prospects while also leading the design department in the development of the staff and managing workloads across the team. The Manager will also work closely with the sales team and clients on commercial interior design, space planning, and programming, selecting commercial office products, and curating world‑class spaces for our clients.
Responsibilitiesand Duties
- Assigns Design and Sales team assignments.
- Directly responsible for the development of the design team and recommends actions needed to elevate the department.
- Responsible for interviewing candidates, hiring team members, and employee retention.
- Provide design direction and support to ensure consistent and high‑quality design.
- Showroom tours – expected to lead and guide a group (Sales or Design) effectively through the showroom space.
- Client/Finish Meetings – top customer interfacing skills for client or finish meetings. Able to step in and take over at any given notice.
- Schedule lunch and learns and outside showroom tours appropriately to educate the team on the latest trends and new products offered by our partners.
- Must communicate effectively with other departments and leadership.
- Work with designer/salesperson/client to determine the purpose and function of environment, budget, scope of project, time schedules, types of furniture and equipment to be installed, and other factors that affect planning interior environments.
- Validate salesperson and/or client on interior design factors such as space planning, layout and utilization of furnishings and equipment, color schemes, color coordination, and codes according to local governing jurisdictions.
- Provide schematic design and design development drawings.
- Coordinate design intent with architectural, mechanical, and electrical plans.
- Perform final double‑checks on all documents before final order entry.
- Ensure installation drawings and core plans are complete and up to date and Project Management is heavily involved.
- Maintains Design Status Report and timekeeping software.
- Attend all design/sales meetings and educational seminars as requested.
- Attend client meetings, both on‑site and off‑site as requested.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Education
- Bachelor’s degree with emphasis on interior design
Required skills
- High level of product knowledge regarding commercial office furniture
- High level of independence – able to work with minimal supervision
- Thrive in a fast‑paced work environment
- Have a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, and be self‑motivated
- Working knowledge of accessibility codes
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
Detail‑oriented - Exceptional customer service skills
Preferred skills
- NCIDQ certification or similar certification (WELL, LEED)
- Working knowledge of AUTOCAD, CET, Project Matrix
- Strong acumen with Microsoft office products
