Communications Specialist

Employment type:
Full-Time, Regular. Salary range: $57,816 – $62,000 depending on qualifications.
The Communications and Community Outreach department supports the city’s goals in a fast-paced environment using a full range of channels. The role involves developing and executing communications strategies, crafting content for multiple channels, and collaborating with internal departments and subject matter experts to inform and engage residents.
Responsibilities- Implements communication strategies that support the goals of the department.
- Conceptualizes and produces communications materials including website updates, brochures, and invitations for departmental programs and activities.
- Takes photographs for programs and events and creates short videos for use across platforms.
- Assists with planning, organizing, and implementing events; participates in committees, task forces, and other activities.
- Works with departments to plan and update digital content.
- Collects and analyzes communication metrics, identifies trends, and develops newsletters, reports, and other documents; translates data into actionable insights for future messaging and channel selection.
- Pursues continuing education for necessary skills and trends in communications.
- Administers City social media profiles, creates educational content, responds to public comments, and assists with crisis communications.
- Assists in acquiring supplies for promotional activities that communicate key City messages.
- Works within established project budgets and tracks relevant metrics for reporting.
- Writes clear, engaging content for city social media, newsletters, website, print materials and other media with a focus on accuracy, accessibility, and transparency.
- Represents the City professionally and positively at meetings and events.
- Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule, including evening and weekend duties, is essential.
- Knowledge: Practices and principles of communications, event planning, public relations; digital communications concepts; data analysis; graphic design; social media skills.
- Skill: Effective verbal and written communication; creativity; proficiency with word processing and presentation software; writing, editing, proofreading; organization and prioritization; teamwork.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or related field.
- Experience: Two (2) years in communications, journalism, marketing, or related field. Acceptable substitutions for education/experience exist.
- Licenses/Certifications: Texas Class C driver’s license (must obtain within 30 days of hire).
- Must pass drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (where applicable), and social security number verification.
- Physical demands include sedentary work with occasional lifting up to 25 pounds; ability to operate standard office equipment; occasional movement to various work areas.
- Office environment with moderate noise; may involve interactions with staff and the public.
The journey-level Communications Specialist role follows diversified procedures and implements processes to achieve end results. This role does not supervise other employees; higher-level responsibilities and supervision exist for the Communications Specialist, Senior.
