Overview
The County of El Dorado, Department of Transportation, Maintenance and Operations Division is responsible for funding, designing, building, operating, and maintaining the County Road System. The division manages road crews, fleet services, equipment mechanics, and traffic control to repair, maintain, and replace roadway and drainage infrastructure across approximately 1083 centerline miles of roadway and 76 bridges.
The OpportunityJoin the Department of Transportation as an Equipment Mechanic I/II to gain experience in maintaining, repairing, and overhauling heavy and light road maintenance and construction equipment.
Responsibilities- Perform skilled maintenance and repair of heavy and light equipment such as trucks, tractors, graders, and caterpillars; diagnose, repair, and overhaul gas and diesel engines.
- Re-line, rebush and rebuild cams, brake pots, valves, and related parts of braking systems.
- Perform major and minor repairs of rear suspension, walking beams, and torque arms.
- Repair and replace driveline components, overhaul rear ends, reduction power dividers, clutch assemblies, universal joints, drive shafts, and related components.
- Repair and maintain manual, automatic, and power shift transmissions, torque converters, and related components.
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain vehicle air brakes, hydraulic systems, and associated power take-off equipment.
- Rebuild, repair and adjust hydraulic pumps, cylinders, control valves, motors, and related components.
- Diagnose and repair power and manual steering systems; electrical systems, starters, generators, and related systems, components, and parts.
Education & Experience Requirements (typing "See Resume" in the application will not be accepted). Where college degrees and/or college course credits are required, degrees and college units must be obtained from a regionally accredited college or university. Courses from non-regionally accredited institutions will not be evaluated for this requirement.
- Equipment Mechanic I: Two (2) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and heavy construction equipment. Successful completion of appropriate trade school or technical coursework in diesel or gasoline-powered mechanics may be substituted for the required work experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of one year.
- Equipment Mechanic II: In addition to the above, either two (2) years of experience at a level equivalent to Equipment Mechanic I, or completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the vehicle/equipment repair trade.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Some positions may require a Hazardous Materials Endorsement within six (6) months from date of hire. Equipment Mechanic I/II requires acquiring a valid commercial Class A or Class B driver's license with no restrictions as to transmission or air brakes (and tanker endorsement where applicable) within six months from date of hire.
- Must regularly lift and carry objects weighing up to 60 pounds.
- May be required to work night and weekend shifts, overtime, and emergency off-hour shifts.
- This recruitment will establish a list for filling current and future extra help vacancies for at least three months.
