The Department of Transportation is responsible for funding, designing, building, operating, and maintaining the County Road System. El Dorado County's Road System currently consists of approximately 1,083 centerline miles of paved roadway, 76 bridges, a multitude of storm drainage systems, and related transportation facilities.
Maintenance and Operations DivisionThe Maintenance and Operations Division is composed of Road Crews, Fleet Services, Equipment Mechanics, and Traffic Control Crews. This dedicated team manages the repair, maintenance, and replacement of existing County roadway and drainage infrastructure. It is also responsible for the maintenance of all 1,083 centerline miles of roadway in the County.
OpportunityJoin the Department of Transportation as an Equipment Mechanic I/II to gain valuable experience in maintaining, repairing, and overhauling heavy and light road maintenance and construction equipment.
Key Responsibilities- Perform skilled maintenance and repair of heavy and light equipment such as trucks, tractors, graders, and caterpillars; diagnose, repair, and overhaul gas and diesel engines.
- Re‑line, rebush and rebuild cams, brake pots, valves, and related parts of braking systems.
- Perform major and minor repairs of rear suspension, walking beams, and torque arms.
- Repair and replace driveline components, overhaul rear ends, reduction power dividers, clutch assemblies, universal joints, drive shafts, and related components.
- Repair and maintain manual, automatic, and power‑shift transmissions, torque converters, and related components.
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain vehicle air brakes, hydraulic systems, and associated power‑take‑off equipment.
- Rebuild, repair and adjust hydraulic pumps, cylinders, control valves, motors, and related components.
- Diagnose and repair power and manual steering systems; electrical systems, starters, generators, and related systems, components, and parts.

Minimum QualificationsHuman Resources will assess your application to determine if you are minimally qualified. Any combination of the required experience, education, and training that would provide the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.
Education & Experience Requirements
Equipment Mechanic I:
Two (2) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and heavy construction equipment.
Successful completion of appropriate trade school or technical coursework in diesel or gasoline‑powered mechanics may be substituted for the required work experience on a year‑for‑year basis to a maximum of one year.
Equipment Mechanic II:
In addition to the above, EITHER two (2) years of experience at a level equivalent to the County's class of Equipment Mechanic I class
OR completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the vehicle/equipment repair trade.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case‑by‑case basis. Must regularly lift and carry objects weighing up to sixty (60) pounds. Must be willing to work night and weekend shifts. Must be willing to work overtime and off‑hour shifts in emergency situations.
Equipment Mechanic I and II must acquire a valid commercial Class A or Class B driver's license with no restrictions as to transmission, air brakes, or Tanker Endorsement within six (6) months…
