Overview
Geisinger offers outpatient Medical Assistants a potential sign-on bonus (up to $3,000 for eligible candidates) and supports work across hundreds of community sites in a progressive learning environment while delivering high-quality outpatient care.
Responsibilities- Obtains and documents, using the rooming tool in the electronic medical record, the patient’s reason for visit, weight, vital signs, visit screening information, medication review, and pertinent information for the provider.
- Sets up examination and treatment rooms between cases.
- Assists patients to prepare for visits with the provider, ensuring patient safety and privacy.
- Provides direct patient care as directed by the provider based on competency and clinic needs (e.g., performs EKGs, wound dressings, and supports the provider during minor surgical procedures and ancillary examinations).
- Prepares and administers medications according to policy and procedure after validation of knowledge and competency; may not administer intravenous medications.
- Completes patient tests and treatments per provider’s order according to policy and procedure after validation of knowledge and competency.
- Collects and prepares laboratory specimens and completes related paperwork to expedite laboratory studies.
- Performs phlebotomy and may assist in specific laboratory functions related to testing, reporting, and quality assurance as educated and overseen by the laboratory.
- Performs receptionist and clerical duties to support patient care and clinic operations, including filing reports and other documents in patients’ medical records.
- Documents in appropriate sections to create a complete and accurate medical record; uses the electronic medical record and scheduling system as designated.
- Facilitates timely appointments, completes referrals and pre-authorizations as needed.
- Collects co-payments.
- Under provider and/or site lead direction, assists with orientation of new personnel.
- Manages ongoing patient communication as directed by the provider, prioritizes communications, and responds to patient questions to ensure efficient use of provider time and timely patient care.
- Reinforces patient education as directed by the provider to support understanding of instructions.
- May inventory non-controlled medical/surgical supplies to ensure adequate stock, verify expiration dates, document utilization, and optimize space and efficiency.
- May access non-controlled medication storage areas and transport non-controlled medications as needed to meet clinic needs.
- Prepares and cleans instruments; follows sterilization and disinfection protocols, including high-level disinfection of instruments and equipment.
- Cleans and sets up examination rooms between patients following infection prevention protocols; observes hand hygiene and infection control precautions.
- Contributes to patient safety and quality improvement initiatives.
Work is typically performed in a clinical environment. Travel may be required. The statements are not all-inclusive and additional competencies may be required by department orientation.
Position DetailsWill consider a Certified Medical Assistant OR a non-certified Medical Assistant for this opening. Pay will be commensurate on experience and certification.
Hiring Incentive: Certified Medical Assistants qualify for a $3,000 sign-on bonus paid over two years. Non-Certified Medical Assistants qualify for a $1,500 sign-on bonus paid over one year. Certain stipulations do apply.
