The Parks Maintenance Small Engine Repair Person, equipment and mechanical focus, is a specialized position requiring advanced knowledge of small engine diagnostics and mechanical repairs, in addition to performing general parks and school grounds maintenance duties. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the operational readiness of all parks and school‑related equipment, including mowers, trimmers, snow blowers, chainsaws, tractors, and other machinery used in maintaining public grounds.
The role also includes performing standard landscape maintenance tasks and may assist in overseeing seasonal workers or laborers as needed.
- Diagnose and repair small engines and equipment including lawnmowers, string trimmers, chainsaws, snow blowers, leaf vacuums, and field grooming machines.
- Perform regular maintenance on equipment: oil changes, fuel system cleaning, belt and blade replacement, spark plug and filter changes, carburetor adjustments, and other tune‑ups.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of parts and tools; recommend parts procurement and assist with tracking maintenance schedules for equipment.
- Troubleshoot and perform mechanical repairs on tractors, utility carts, and other park service vehicles.
- Perform seasonal preparations and winterization for all small engines and mechanical equipment.
- Conduct field diagnostics and in‑field repairs when equipment fails during use.
- Perform general park and grounds maintenance duties: mowing, trimming, watering, planting, raking, litter removal, graffiti removal, and restroom cleaning.
- Maintain athletic fields by striping, raking, dragging, and setting up field equipment (goals, nets, etc.).
- Install, maintain, and repair fences, benches, playground structures, water fountains, and drainage systems.
- Operate and maintain hand tools, shop equipment, and light power tools.
- Assist in snow removal operations using snow blowers, plows, or hand shoveling.
- May assist in training or supervising seasonal maintenance staff or general laborers.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Working knowledge of both 2‑ and 4‑cycle internal combustion engines.
- Must earn small engine technology certification within one year of employment.
- Experience with grounds maintenance equipment and power tools, including the mechanical repair of equipment and tools.
- Previous experience in the supervision of other employees preferred.
- Must utilize own tools (contractual allowance provided).
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to deal efficiently and effectively with the public and other.
Incumbent may be required to work at any time during the 24‑hour day to respond to weather‑related or emergency needs. Incumbent may be required to work in inclement weather.
Physical RequirementsAbility and agility sufficient to operate equipment and supplies used for landscaping and general grounds maintenance, walk long distances over sometimes uneven terrain, lift up to 50 pounds from the ground to shoulder height, and generally perform heavy labor.
HoursMonday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM (40 hours per week)
SalaryWithout hoisting license:
Starting $18.03 – $19.13 per hour, annual increases up to $24.96 per hour.
With hoisting license:
Starting $19.10 – $20.27 per hour, annual increases up to $26.44 per hour.
