Performs responsible supervisory law enforcement work and will manage the activities for public safety personnel, including both sworn police officers and non-sworn public safety officers. This position is subject to work assignments throughout the First Health Corporate system but will focus primarily on the hospitals, which are in Moore County, Hoke County, Richmond County and Montgomery County. This position requires working various shifts and will involve responding to after-hour incidents.
An employee in this class performs a full range of general law enforcement duties. Work potentially includes serving as an assistant squad leader for an assigned shift, reviewing the work of assigned officers and backing up difficult calls; serving as field training officer on the squad; and for providing expertise for special assignments requiring specialized training and law enforcement experience. Employees must exercise judgment, initiative and calm control when performing duties;
work involves significant independence of action and judgment. Work also involves frequent public contact, which requires tact, firmness and decisiveness. Work is performed in accordance with departmental policy and state and federal law, supplemented with specific directions from superior officers. Employees are subject to hazards associated with law enforcement work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as dangerous persons, loud noises, and hazardous spills with fumes, oils, gases, or flammable liquids.
Work may be subject to OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated through observation, discussion and review of reports for adherence to laws, department procedures, community feedback and acceptance, and proper judgment.
- Assist in supervising police officers / public safety officers; provide technical assistance to other shift officers; review squad officer’s reports; provide performance coaching and evaluation for assigned staff under the supervision of the Lieutenant.
- Serve as field training officer for new officers including demonstrating and interpreting departmental policies and procedures and making assessment and written records of trainee progress.
- Patrol facilities and property in a police car, on bicycle, on foot or by other appropriate means; responds to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, domestic disputes, loud and disruptive behavior; completes calls by determining true nature of the situation and taking whatever legal or persuasive action is warranted.
- Investigate traffic accidents; issue traffic citation; direct traffic and participate in other emergency operation activities; maintain vehicle, weapons and other equipment in standards working order.
- Perform investigations of crimes through observation, questioning witnesses, and gathering physical evidence; perform investigative tasks, arrest and process criminal suspects; prepare cases and testify in court concerning observations and activities.
- Lead and model effective performance including effective community policing principles and practices.
- Conduct departmental security checks; talk with the public and staff regarding their concerns within the community and organization with respect to crime and crime prevention.
