Position: English Instructor 9 Months

The English Instructor will guide and direct the learning experiences of students in the field of composition and literature, ensuring they develop knowledge, skills, and motivation.

Faculty are expected to be accessible to students, colleagues, and staff, and to share a fair share of the college’s workload.

Summary

The role includes teaching English courses in a variety of delivery modes—traditional classroom, online, hybrid, weekend, 8‑week, 5‑week, and evening. Additional duties involve participation on college committees and other support tasks as assigned by the department head. Classes may be taught at the Pinehurst Campus, Hoke Campus, or at the Moore County high‑school campus. Integration with other disciplines and support for technology programs is a plus.

Interviews will consist of a teaching demonstration and a written assessment.

Essential Functions
  • Provide effective and high‑quality instruction using multiple modes of teaching and learning (online, hybrid, face‑to‑face) based on department needs.
  • Teach a variety of English pre‑curriculum and curriculum courses based on department needs.
  • Create an academic environment that is open and encouraging to all students.
  • Exhibit an appropriate depth and breadth of knowledge related to the discipline of study and show continuous growth by engaging in current and relevant professional development.
  • Integrate diverse teaching and learning approaches that respond to all students’ experiences and project a positive attitude about each student’s ability to learn.
  • Uphold and model professional behavior, scholarly and ethical standards.
  • Maintain accurate academic and professional records and reports in a timely fashion (e.g., syllabus submission, roster and grade documentation).
  • Support learning outside of class.
  • Support the School of Education, Communication, English, and World Languages and the College in fulfilling the mission.
  • Assist in program and curriculum review, revision, and development.
  • Maintain positive and professional interpersonal relationships with students, faculty, staff, and administration.
  • Participate in professional development activities to improve teaching and learning practices.
  • Support the school and the College by participating in faculty assembly, governance, leadership, committee service, and faculty development.
  • Respond to emails in a timely and professional manner.
  • Seek opportunities for professional growth specific to instruction.
  • Remain available, responsive, and approachable while working with students.
  • Demonstrate respect for students as individuals and maintain confidentiality of information shared.
  • Maintain knowledge and awareness of SCC policies and procedures in records and reports in a timely manner.
  • Treat others with dignity and respect, discouraging harassment, bullying, or abrasive behavior directed at colleagues, students, or visitors.
  • Support open expression and be courteous, sensitive, and respectful to others.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues and students across campus to identify and address needs and resources that ensure opportunity for all.
  • Advance the College’s mission and core values of respect, opportunity, helpfulness, integrity, and excellence.
Qualifications Required

Education and Experience

Master’s degree or higher in English, a master’s degree or higher in English Education with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in English, or a master’s degree and 18 graduate hours in English is required.

Preferred

Education and Experience

Prior community college teaching experience is preferred.
