Pharmacist, Staff in Charge (Healthcare)
Ensure safe preparation/dispensing and cost-effective (inventory control) management of the entire medication use process. Oversee daily workflow; supervise pharmacy technicians in their assigned clinic.
JobSpecific Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as Pharmacist in Charge (PIC) for assigned location, subject to the requirements below.
- Must be on duty a minimum of 50% of pharmacy hours.
- Responsible for the validity and legality of all prescriptions/orders upon which drugs are dispensed.
- Responsible for the security and accountability of all drugs stored in the pharmacy.
- Maintain a daily prescription record.
- Ensure pharmacy team members have been appropriately trained to follow policies and procedures.
- Must satisfactorily complete a test administered by the Board of Pharmacy on the requirements and responsibilities of a PIC.
- Shall always have immediate access to the pharmacy.
- Provide education and in‑services for pharmacy technicians, nurses, and team members.
- Participate in the hiring and performance management process.
- Oversee pharmacy technicians.
- Review and assess medication orders.
- Compound and dispense medications, antineoplastic drugs, and intravenous admixtures.
- Ensure medications are prepared, labeled, and dispensed accurately and promptly.
- Understand USP 797, USP 800, and proper aseptic technique.
- Ensure all doses of intravenous admixtures prepared by Pharmacy Technicians are checked.
- Manage purchases/returns/recalls and inventory of all pharmaceutical agents and medical supplies.
- Work closely with vendors to ensure receipt of the most cost‑effective products.
- Manage controlled substances inventory and follow all policies regarding the receipt, issuance, and storage of controlled substances distribution.
- Maintain drug replacement and sample medication inventory separate from purchased inventory. Participate in drug study audits.
- Prepare chemotherapy and other intravenous medications.
- Perform daily hood cleaning and documentation.
- Maintain daily temperature logs.
- Conduct monthly inventory process, ensuring accurate drug count and expiration date documentation.
- Conduct monthly emergency drug box/crash cart inventory and expiration date check.
- Perform quality assurance activities as assigned.
- Provide drug information to patients, physicians, nurses, and Team Members.
- Counsel patients regarding medications.
- Doctoral Degree in Pharmacy (Pharm
D) preferred, but not required. - Registered pharmacist (RPh) required.
- Valid Arkansas Pharmacists license.
- 2–4 years experience in IV admixture.
- Experience in oncology preferred.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Basic math skills.
- Leadership skills.
- Organizational skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of aseptic technique and USP 797 requirements.
- Ability and willingness to work with potential for exposure to hazardous and toxic substances (including chemotherapeutic, cytotoxic drugs, and cleaning solutions) and sticks or cuts by needles and other sharp items.
- Ability to operate a computer.
- Ability to handle a high volume of work with acceptable speed and accuracy.
- Ability to stand and walk for a long period of time.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form.
Interpersonal SkillsMust interact and communicate both verbally and in written form. Must inter‑exchange information regarding patients with physicians, other departmental Team Members, and outside agencies frequently while respecting the confidentiality of patient information.
