Police Officer (School Resource Officer)

Position Summary

The School Police Officer, also known as a School Resource Officer (SRO), is a certified law enforcement professional assigned to a school campus to ensure a safe and secure learning environment. The officer builds positive relationships with students, staff, and parents while enforcing laws, preventing crime, and serving as a mentor and role model for adolescents.

Law Enforcement & Safety

• Enforce federal, state, and local laws on school property.
• Respond to emergencies, disturbances, and criminal incidents.
• Conduct investigations involving students, staff, or visitors when necessary.
• Collaborate with school administrators on safety protocols and threat assessments.
• Monitor school grounds and surrounding areas to deter criminal activity.

Prevention & Education

• Provide classroom presentations on topics such as drug prevention, bullying, cyber safety, and conflict resolution.
• Mentor and counsel students, particularly those at risk.
• Promote positive behavior and support restorative practices when appropriate.
• Participate in safety drills and emergency preparedness planning.

Community Engagement

• Build positive relationships with students to foster trust and approachability.
• Serve as a liaison between the school and local law enforcement agencies.
• Communicate with parents and guardians regarding safety concerns.
• Attend school events and extracurricular activities as needed.

Administrative Duties

• Maintain accurate reports and documentation of incidents.
• Assist in reviewing and updating school safety policies.
• Collaborate with school counselors and administrators on student interventions.

• High school diploma or GED required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field preferred.
• Current certification as a law enforcement officer in the state of employment.
• Minimum of 2–3 years of law enforcement experience preferred.
• Experience working with adolescents strongly preferred.
• Strong communication, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a school environment and with diverse populations.

• Knowledge of juvenile law and adolescent development.
• Crisis intervention and de-escalation skills.
• Cultural competency and sensitivity.
• Sound judgment and decision-making under pressure.
• Ability to balance enforcement with mentorship.

• Assigned to a junior high school campus during school hours.
• Require attendance at after-school events or emergency call-outs.
• Frequent interaction with adolescents, faculty, parents, and community members.

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
• Capability to respond quickly in emergency situations.
• Must meet department physical fitness standards.
