Work Schedule:

Teachers are on duty for the regular school day. Periodically may be required to attend faculty meetings, after school events and a normal expectation of the position.

Position Summary

The library media specialist is responsible for preparing, organizing and providing library and multimedia services to students and faculty in the school.

Essential Functions

To accomplish this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation, each essential function satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to help enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of current trends in library/media practice, information technology and literacy.
  • Serve as the primary information specialist to patrons, providing access to resources both inside and outside the school.
  • Assist with the identification, location, and interpretation of information located in and outside the library media center.
  • Provide instruction in the use of library media center and conduct instructional consultation, participating in curriculum development and assessment projects.
  • Provide professional development on new and emerging technology and guide instructional use of technology in classroom programs.
  • Keep patrons informed of new software and hardware and instruct them on technology tools.
  • Assist in the use of technology to access information and networks that enhance learning.
  • Develop and implement a plan of action that ensures skills are taught in a logical sequence for K‑12 students.
  • Assist with electronic retrieval of systems for bibliographies and card catalogs.
  • Perform administrative tasks such as ordering books, processing items, planning finances, organizing, and managing other duties.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of students and how the library program can address their needs.
  • Establish goals for the library media program within budgetary guidelines.
  • Develop a plan to evaluate the effectiveness of the library media program.
  • Create an environment of respect and rapport and establish a culture of learning.
  • Establish and maintain library procedures, physical and virtual spaces, and supervise paraprofessionals.
  • Manage student behavior and deliver services by communicating with the learning community.
  • Use questioning and research techniques, engage students in literature, and assess instruction at the whole class, small group, and one‑on‑one levels.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, responsiveness, and professionalism.
  • Maintain accurate library records, communicate with school staff and community, participate in a professional learning community, grow and develop professionally, and support advocates for all students.
  • Adhere to the Library Bill of Rights, ALA Code of Ethics, and Arkansas Code of Ethics.
Position Qualifications

Adhere to the above job functions and all policies of the district. Perform other duties as directed by the Building Administrator. The physical demands for this position are those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Master’s Degree (Required), Field of Study:
    Library Media (Preferred)
  • Teaching License (Required)
  • Prior experience as a library/media specialist (Preferred)
Work Environment

Library indoor setting in a school environment for most of the setting and exterior activities both in and outside the district as applicable.
