This is a full‑time position with the Department of Corrections. The Corrections Lieutenant enforces Department of Corrections policies and correctional institution implementation adjustments (IA's) and procedures. The role involves scheduling and supervising correctional personnel, controlling and monitoring inmate activities, maintaining security and safety for offenders and employees.

Knowledge Of
  • Department of Corrections policies, institutional operations, and procedures.

  • The methods, procedures, and practices of controlling and supervising inmates confined to a correctional institution.
  • Extensive knowledge and use of the physical force continuum and Use of Force Policy.

Functions
  • Schedule correctional staff for all shifts to ensure the security of the facility and safety of employees and offenders.
  • Enforce Department of Corrections policies and institution IA's and procedures.
  • Determine appropriate action in emergency situations.
  • Supervise subordinate staff to ensure the objectives of the work unit are met.
  • Interview staff.
  • Provide training and work direction.
  • Approve leave requests.
  • Address staff problems and recommend disciplinary action.
  • Conduct performance reviews and complete performance documents.
  • Maintain security by inspecting all posts for appropriate staffing to ensure the safety of offenders and personnel.
  • Review officers’ reports on offenders and offender activities.
  • Keep a daily, detailed log of institutional activities.
  • Authorize and direct offender counts.
  • Coordinate searches of inmate property for contraband.
  • Arbitrate disputes among offenders and staff.
  • Initiate drills, exercises, provide staff training.
  • Be responsible for the facility point of entry (POE) to ensure staff appropriately process all individuals through the metal detector and search items for contraband.
  • Determine appropriate action in security breakdown and emergency medical situations by evaluating the situation and informing facility managers to de‑escalate potential hazards.
  • Authorize emergency procedures.
  • Control handling and immediate storage of contraband.
  • Direct offender movement into and out of the facility to ensure compliance with operational procedures.
  • Process new inmates admitted to the facility.
  • Receive personal property and maintain records of transactions.
  • Authorize and plan transportation of offenders.
  • Verify offenders at the completion of their sentences for release/discharge.
  • May serve as Disciplinary Hearing Officer.
  • Investigate situations involving offender violations to aid in disciplinary hearing process.
  • Act as initial commander in emergency situations.
  • May work with and care for a K9 and a K9 vehicle.
  • Search offender living areas as needed for contraband.
  • Prepare reports of findings.
  • Participate in administrative tasks to support efficient management of the facility.
  • Inform subordinates of changes in policies and operational procedures.
  • Conduct rounds in all areas of the facility during shift and complete appropriate logs.
