Position Overview
Provide skilled nursing care for incarcerated offenders in various clinic settings. This is a weekend day shift from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., 36 hours per week (Friday, Saturday, Sunday), including every third holiday. Salary ranges from $25.73 to $34.03 per hour, plus a $5.00 night differential, $1.50 weekend differential, and potential overtime.

- Accurately document offender medical records.
- Provide standardized patient education within established nursing guidelines.
- Transcribe reports at shift change.
- Preserve confidentiality.
- Provide physical care and treatments, administer medications, collaborate on treatment plans, employ infection control measures, provide referral to clinical staff for new arrivals, crisis intervention, interview and triage offenders, and perform instruction and orientation.
- Assist physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners with minor medical and surgical procedures.
- Ensure ordering and restocking of medications and supplies.
- May be required to participate in restraining an offender for medical reasons.
- Observe and report the physical and emotional condition of offenders, including medication and treatment effectiveness during sick call and emergencies.
- Promote and be accountable for safety and security of the clinical environment through conscientious observations and contraband control, including counting syringes, needles, narcotics, instruments, and key control.
- Operate a variety of clinical equipment available in the assigned unit.
- Inform supervisors of any security or safety violations through report writing.
- Attend training programs as assigned, including successful completion of the Basic Training Academy and Threat Pattern Recognition self‑defense course.
- This position may be required to work any shift, weekends, and holidays.
Current, valid license as a Licensed Practical Nurse from the South Dakota Board of Nursing.
Required Competencies- Ability to treat patients daily in a variety of settings.
- Follow patient confidentiality standards.
- Respond to emergency situations involving offenders and/or medical events.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Read and comprehend the English language.
- Communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing.
- Excellent discernment and decision‑making skills.
- Follow instructions and pay attention to details.
- Work a variety of shifts on a full‑time basis.
- Intravenous certification.
- Long‑term and acute care experience.
- Experience as an LPN in a correctional environment.
All job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation, urine drug screen, and the candidate’s ability to perform the essential functions of the position. The SD DOC is committed to a drug‑free workplace.
Individuals selected may carry Oleoresin Capsicum (OC/pepper spray) after completing a direct (level
1) exposure training program and a written and practical self‑defense exam. Required skills include:
- Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist.
- Stabilize another person for a controlled takedown.
- Use arms, palms, and feet to deliver blows.
- Withstand impact on own body from strikes/blows.
- Rotate body 90° with feet planted for striking.
- Get down on one or both knees and stand again with multiple repetitions.
TB screening is required of all new employees upon hire.
