Position Overview
The Senior Digital Control Systems Engineer provides advanced engineering expertise in Digital Control Computing and Real-Time Process Control Systems, supporting the design, development, testing, implementation, and optimization of high-reliability control systems. This role involves both independent and collaborative work within a multidisciplinary team environment and includes technical leadership, mentorship, and oversight of assigned engineering activities.
The successful candidate will contribute to system design, software development, troubleshooting, and performance optimization of digital control systems used in process and equipment control environments, including ICS, SCADA, PLC, and HMI platforms.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, test, and maintain digital control systems and real-time computing solutions for process and equipment control.
Develop and test control logic, ladder logic, HMI displays, and communication interfaces for industrial and operational technology environments.
Perform software requirements definition, functional analysis, and system design for control and automation solutions.
Program using high-level and low-level languages, including assembly programming, scripting, and automation tools.
Develop automated scripts, test cases, and execute system and software validation activities.
Troubleshoot and resolve complex hardware and software issues within digital control and real-time systems.
Support system performance monitoring, optimization, and reliability improvements in high-availability environments.
Apply and adhere to established engineering governance, quality assurance, and procedural controls.
Maintain, update, and develop operating and departmental procedures as required.
Provide technical evaluations, recommendations, and engineering support to internal stakeholders and external organizations.
Support procurement activities, including preparation of technical specifications, requisitions, and spare parts recommendations.
Provide technical support during field installation and commissioning activities.
On a periodic basis, provide technical guidance and oversight to staff by assigning work, reviewing deliverables, and offering mentorship.
Assist with data collection and analysis for departmental planning, budgeting, and variance monitoring.
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s degree (4-year university degree) in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
Minimum 6 years of relevant engineering experience, specifically in Digital Control Computing and Real-Time Systems.
Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the Province of Ontario, or eligible for licensure.
Strong understanding of computer architecture and real-time operating environments.
Hands-on experience with Industrial Control Systems (ICS), SCADA systems, PLCs, and HMI configuration tools.
Experience working with ladder logic, control logic development, and industrial communication protocols.
Proven ability to work within regulated environments with strict governance and procedural requirements.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-based, cross-functional environment and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards of quality and accountability.
Additional Assets (Preferred)
Experience with high-reliability or safety-critical systems.
Background in process control, automation, or real-time embedded systems.
Prior experience mentoring or leading technical staff.
