Purpose Statement The job of Transportation Dispatcher is performed to support the educational process with specific responsibilities for coordinating and assigning drivers to regularly scheduled routes, special excursions and field trips; processing requests pertaining to routine and emergency issues; maintaining department records in accordance with mandated requirements; and coordinating assigned projects.
Essential Functions- Assists in the planning of bus routes and schedules to ensure all routes are covered.
- Collaborates with contracted charter buses for additional transportation needs (e.g., field trips, athletic events) to determine driver and equipment requirements and ensure adequate coverage.
- Coordinates buses and drivers for extracurricular activities (e.g., field trips, athletic events) to ensure transportation.
- Dispatches drivers to meet schedule demands.
- Informs school personnel and parents of practices, rules, regulations, laws, procedures, and provides information for their follow‑up action.
- Maintains a variety of manual and electronic documents, files, and records to document activities, provide reliable information, and comply with administrative requirements.
- Operates a two‑way radio in accordance with FCC regulations to gather and convey information.
- Participates in unit meetings, in‑service training, workshops, etc. as required to convey and/or gather needed information.
- Performs the functions of Transportation Bus Drivers as needed to meet student transportation requirements.
- Processes a variety of materials (e.g., field trip requests, route changes) to update and distribute information, authorize action, and comply with mandated requirements.
- Responds to inquiries from students, parents, and/or staff to provide necessary information, direction, and/or resolution.
- Responds to injuries and/or accidents to comply with established policies and regulatory guidelines.
- Schedules work assignments for bus drivers and bus aides to ensure completion of transportation routes in a safe and timely manner, in accordance with administrative guidelines and legal requirements.
Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements:Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS – Required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill‑based competencies include operating two‑way radio and county emergency radio; operating standard office equipment; utilizing pertinent software applications; performing standard clerical procedures; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE – Required to perform basic math (including fractions, percents, ratios), understand written procedures, write routine documents, speak clearly, and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge competencies include relevant department policies and procedures, office practices and procedures, concepts of grammar and punctuation, first aid, and CPR.
ABILITY – Capable of scheduling activities, meetings, and/or events; gathering, collating, and/or classifying data; considering multiple factors when using equipment; working independently with others in a wide variety of circumstances; operating equipment using standardized methods; working with a diverse range of individuals; analyzing issues and creating action plans; and managing changing work priorities, deadlines, and frequent interruptions.
RESPONSIBILITIES – Working under limited supervision while following standardized practices; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; utilizing some resources from other work units when required.
Work EnvironmentThe usual methods of performing the job require some lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and fine finger dexterity. The job involves approximately 75% sitting, 15% walking, and 10% standing in a generally clean and healthy environment.
