Chaperone / Community Volunteer / Volunteer Coach

Purpose Statement

The job of Assistant Coach is to design and implement program activities in accordance with applicable rules and regulations related to the sport; supervise student athletes during all aspects of their participation; use sound instructional techniques; and serve as a positive role model to student athletes, the community, and various organizations. Individuals in this job classification are assigned to a position for a specific sport at the Varsity, JV/Frosh or Junior High level.

This job reports to the Athletic Director.

Essential Functions
  • Assess student athletes for the purpose of providing feedback and determining team placement.
  • Attend meetings, workshops, conferences, etc. to receive and convey information related to their role.
  • Communicate with parents, students, officials, administrators, and community for the purpose of providing information, assistance, and/or direction.
  • Instruct student athletes to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • Maintain records (e.g., game/student athlete statistics, insurance, permission forms, emergency information, schedules, equipment inventories) to comply with district, athletic conference, and state requirements.
  • Manage uniforms, equipment, and school facilities to maintain items responsibly and safely.
  • Monitor student athletes’ academic eligibility to comply with AIA requirements and provide interventions for those needing assistance.
  • Supervise student athletes during all areas of participation to ensure a low-risk environment.
  • Teach sports techniques, rules, strategies, and tactics to prepare the team and individuals for competition.
Other Functions

Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Skills include adapting to changing work priorities; administering first aid; applying laws, codes, policies, and regulations; organizing and communicating information.

Knowledge includes basic math, interpreting technical information, writing technical materials, speaking persuasively, analyzing situations, equipment used in activity/program, injury prevention protocols, laws and regulations, eligibility rules, public relations protocols, professional standards, safety practices, and procedures.

Abilities include scheduling activities and meetings, gathering and collating data, working with a variety of individuals, solving problems, communicating across cultures, dealing with interruptions, exhibiting leadership, maintaining confidentiality, meeting deadlines, motivating athletes, enforcing discipline, setting priorities, and working extended hours.

Responsibilities

Work under limited supervision following standardized practices; direct others within a small unit; utilize resources from other units as needed.

Work Environment

Physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching; fine finger dexterity. Job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, 40% standing. Exposure to temperature extremes and injury risk.

Experience

Job related experience is required.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent.
