Purpose Statement

The job of Head Coach is to design and implement the athletic program for the assigned sport(s) in accordance with applicable rules and regulations; supervise other coaching personnel and students; use sound instructional techniques; serve as a positive role model; and act as a liaison for the school and program with other schools, the community, and organizations. Individuals are assigned to a position for the assigned sport(s) and oversee all aspects of the respective athletic program(s).

This job reports to the Athletic Director.

Essential Functions
  • Assesses student athletes for the purpose of providing feedback on performance and determining team placement.
  • Attends meetings, workshops, conferences, etc. to receive and convey information related to the role.
  • Conducts activities (e.g., parent orientations, recognition events, banquets) to provide information about the program and recognize participants’ accomplishments.
  • Develops team and individual practice regimes (strength, speed, agility, nutrition, injury prevention) to enhance performance.
  • Develops game strategies/plans (analyzing opponent strengths/weaknesses, athlete abilities, creating plays) for competition preparation.
  • Guides other coaching personnel in instructional techniques and practice organization for mentoring.
  • Identifies program needs and recommends expenditures for activities, equipment, and supplies to enhance the program.
  • Implements practice schedules and related events (facility and equipment usage, staff assignments) for efficient program operation.
  • Instructs student athletes to promote growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • Maintains records (game statistics, insurance, permission forms, emergency information, schedules, equipment inventories) to comply with district, athletic conference, and state requirements.
  • Monitors student athletes’ academic eligibility and provides intervention (counseling, tutoring) as needed to maintain eligibility.
  • Oversees assistant coaches, student managers, volunteers, etc. to provide direction and monitoring.
  • Promotes the athletic program through activities (off-season clinics, skill-camps, community meetings) to increase interest and participation.
  • Responds to inquiries from students, parents, school personnel, media, college representatives, etc. for information and assistance.
  • Keeps the school athletic director informed of issues impacting the program (liability concerns, parent concerns, etc.).
  • Provides appropriate and prudent supervision for all athletes and students involved in the program.
  • Explains and discusses the PVUSD Athletic Code of Conduct with all athletes.
  • Maintains high standards of personal conduct and serves as a role model for athletes.
  • Ensures all coaches involved with the program, whether paid or volunteer, are cleared through the PVUSD Human Resources Department.
Other Functions

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
