The Street Transportation Department is seeking skilled Electricians to join the Traffic Services Division, which is responsible for installing, maintaining, and operating traffic signals throughout Phoenix to ensure the safe and efficient movement of vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians. These positions are assigned to the Traffic Signal Shop, which manages the construction, remodeling, and maintenance of approximately 1,400 signalized intersections across the city.

Position Overview

As an Electrician in the Traffic Signal Shop, you will perform advanced electrical work involving the maintenance, construction, installation, modification, and repair of electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures in accordance with industry standards for commercial and industrial applications. Work assignments may include interpreting sketches, blueprints, verbal instructions, and work orders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Install underground conduits and pole bases.
  • Erect and dress signal equipment.
  • Install electrical services and pull/terminate multi‑conductor cable.
  • Maintain and repair traffic signal systems.
Work Schedule

Current construction crew hours are Monday through Friday, 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM. However, this position may require off‑shift work, standby duty, and occasional weekends. Due to the critical nature of traffic signal operations, Electricians must be available for scheduled and emergency overtime, including after‑hours call‑outs to repair damaged or inoperative equipment.

Ideal Candidate Ability To
  • Obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Must have a permit by the date of hire.
  • Troubleshoot electrical circuits.
Knowledge Of/in
  • Electrical code NFPA 70 and NFPA 70E.
Salary

$35.08 – $40.61 per hour base wage. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.

Additional Compensation for Unit 002 Positions
  • Shift Differential Pay for night and weekend hours.
  • Standby Pay: $2.50 per hour.
  • Callout Pay:
    Paid at time and a half your regular hourly rate.
  • Tool Allowance: $300 annually, prorated based on number of months in position.
Time Off
  • 13.5 paid holidays.
  • Vacation:
    Earn 8 hours per month.
  • Sick Leave:
    Earn 10 hours per month.

  • 401(a) plan with a 3.62% employer contribution on your base wage.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of a recognized four‑year electrical apprenticeship program, or equivalent training; OR three years of experience as a skilled electrician.
