Overview

Shift differential offered for 2nd and 3rd shifts. Pay range $27.49 to $41.23 per hour, starting rate $27.49 to $34.36. Rate determined by skills, qualifications, experience, education, certifications, training and internal equity.

Position

Rail Vehicle Mechanic performs skilled mechanical and minor electrical duties: inspections, preventive and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting on all mechanical and electrical systems. Operates equipment necessary for repair and maintenance, documents and records work performed, follows safety policies and procedures.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of experience performing skilled mechanical work including inspection, diagnosis, maintenance and repair of light/heavy equipment.
  • OR equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform essential duties.
  • Must be available to work weekends, holidays, overtime, odd and unusual hours; may be called in on day‑off or respond to emergencies.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with rail vehicles and equipment, heavy‑du‑truck repair and maintenance, or automotive technology.
  • HVAC certification.
Responsibilities
  • Works rotating shifts (24/7), may work overtime or be called back due to emergencies.
  • Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Performs safety and preventive maintenance inspections on rail vehicles and related equipment.
  • Inspects, diagnoses and repairs multiple systems and subsystems associated with rail vehicles.
  • Reads and interprets basic electrical and pneumatic schematics to troubleshoot issues related to rail vehicles.
  • Performs basic repairs to electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic components.
  • Inspects, repairs and tests malfunctions to restore rail vehicles to service condition.
  • Responds to off‑site emergencies.
  • Uses and operates variety of shop equipment and other tools for maintenance and repair of rail vehicles.
  • Complies with all safety policies and procedures, attends safety training, participates in ongoing training, practices safe work processes, contributes to a safe working environment for self and others.
  • Documents and records work performed, parts and materials used.
  • Demonstrates continuous improvements to operations, decreases turnaround times, streamlines work processes, works cooperatively.
  • Assists in cross‑training others.
  • Clears shop and equipment as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Skills & Knowledge

Knowledge of:

  • Rail vehicle maintenance and repair program operations, services, activities.
  • Current methods, equipment, tools and materials used in inspection, diagnosis, repair and maintenance of rail vehicles and equipment.
  • Methods and techniques for preventive maintenance, diagnostic troubleshooting, repair.
  • Mechanical and electrical theory principles.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Basic computer knowledge.

Skills in:

  • Diagnosing, troubleshooting and repairing rail vehicles and systems.
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints, maintenance manuals, schematics and specifications.
  • Using and caring for testing equipment, power tools and hand tools.
  • Understanding and following oral and written directions.
  • Accurately diagnosing mechanical and electrical repair needs.
  • Performing safety inspections and identifying hazards.
  • Preparing repair and maintenance records.
  • Interpreting and using operating and repair manuals.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

Heavy manual labor, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting (up to 100 lbs), repetitive motions. Work performed in shop and outdoors, exposure to extreme heat and cold, electrical hazards, chemicals, vibration, grease, oil, dust, fumes, smoke, intense noise levels.

Additional Requirements
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license.
  • Must successfully pass Rail Vehicle Operator Safety Training.
  • Valid physical examination.
  • Background check and drug screen required.
