Summary
The Phoenix VA HCS is seeking a Food Service Worker to join our Nutrition and Food team. May work in one or more functional areas of the kitchen such as food preparation, dish and pot washing, dry and refrigerated storage and receiving, and the serving area.
This is an open continuous announcement until February 4, 2026. Qualified applicants will be considered and referred every two weeks or as vacancies become available.

- Sets up and breaks down assigned station with the correct supplies and food items.
- Portions food items into standard serving sizes using proper utensils and specified dishware.
- Selects and places correct items on patient trays.
- Decides what food items to serve for the most common diets; identifies discrepancies between prescribed diets and food items designated by the menu.
- Sets up dining room tables for service, places food and beverages on tables, and replenishes items as necessary.
- Delivers meal trays to patients’ bedsides and reports comments or complaints to the supervisor or dietitian.
- Provides assistance to cooks in the food preparation area, such as weighing, measuring, and assembling ingredients according to standardized recipes.
- Prepares fresh fruit/cold salads/dressings/sandwich fillings and simple cold desserts.
- Reads and interprets regular or modified menus, diet cards, tray tickets or patient selections.
- Performs heavy cleaning tasks throughout the food service and related areas.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
11:30am–8:00pm. Sunday through Saturday – 40 hours per week with a rotating schedule that may include weekends, holidays, days, evenings, and nights. Days off determined by the needs of the service.

Physical RequirementsWork is performed in kitchen areas with heat and humidity from cooking and dishwashing equipment. Duties include light to moderate physical activity and may include heavy work such as moving large utensils and carts. Continuous standing and walking; frequent bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling. Frequently lifts up to 20 pounds unassisted and may lift more with assistance.
Conditions of employment- U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may be appointed where qualified citizens cannot be recruited.
- Suitable for Federal employment, determined by background investigation.
- All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis prior to appointment. Refusal to test will result in denial of employment.

As a condition of employment, a 1-year probationary period will be served. Evaluations will consider performance, agency needs, and efficiency of service. After probation, employment ends unless certified in writing that continued employment advances the public interest.

EXPERIENCE: Evidence of training or experience demonstrating the ability to perform the duties is required. Applicants will be rated under the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
