Position Highlights

The Department of Neurology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix (COM-P) is seeking a highly motivated candidate for a full-time position as Research Scientist in Dr. Ekokobe Fonkem's laboratory. The lab focuses on studies of glioblastoma, neurofibroma, diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, and diffuse midline glioma, as well as neuroimmunology studies on chronic neurologic diseases and neurodegeneration. The successful candidate is expected to work independently and be productive and collaborative with other team members.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Plan, design, and conduct advanced, multi-disciplinary research involving mouse models, human tissue and blood samples, as well as activities related to sensor development, integration, calibration, and validation using redox and proton transfer molecules.
  • Complete complex research projects at different stages (advanced through nearly completed).
  • Perform analysis of body fluids using clinical lab-based methods, and supervise and maintain laboratory instruments.
  • Formulate, troubleshoot, and optimize research methods and techniques as needed. Independently reproduce, evaluate, research, and improve techniques currently used.
  • Analyze data, enter results, and present findings/reports in the weekly laboratory meetings.
  • Prepare and revise manuscripts for publication.
  • Participate in grant writing, including generating preliminary data, submitting grant applications, and preparing progress reports.
  • Perform literature reviews regularly and bring new ideas to the projects.
  • Attend seminars and scientific conferences when available.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all laboratory work and experiments.
  • Assist in writing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for laboratory methods.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance of research activities.
  • Complete the assigned work in time.
  • Work collaboratively with team members in the lab, and with scientific investigators within and outside of the University of Arizona and Banner University Medical Center.
  • Help supervise and mentor postdoctoral fellows, students, and research assistants in the lab.
  • Support the translational research activities of the laboratory.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge in use of mass spectrometry and mass spectroscopy methods.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Knowledge of scRNA-sequencing, proteomics, metabolomics, bioinformatics, confocal microscopy, in vivo physiological animal studies.
  • Skills in molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, immunology and animal studies are required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • 5 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Medicine.
Preferred Qualifications
  • MD, DO, or PhD degree.
  • Proven track record of creativity and established track record of publishing in peer‑reviewed journals.
