Job Overview
The laboratory of Deveroux Ferguson, PhD at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix is seeking a highly motivated Research Technician I to aid in a research project focused on the genetic background of various neurological disorders. The successful candidate will be a well‑rounded, enthusiastic individual with training in the broad area of biomedical sciences. The candidate should have basic experience performing research in a laboratory setting, and be familiar with techniques such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR and sequencing.
In addition, the candidate is expected to aid in the data analysis and have an interest (or experience) in basic bioinformatic analyses techniques. This individual should be detail‑oriented, conscientious, able to follow instructions, and able to communicate in a clear, concise manner orally and in writing.
- Maintain sample and lab organization to ensure efficient workflow, accuracy and compliance in experimental procedures.
- Under supervision, set up and carry out a range of lab tests and procedure operations, including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, behavior testing and sequencing, ensuring compliance with established protocols.
- Under guidance of PI, record laboratory results, make observations and interpret results to contribute to the overall study objectives and research goals.
- Maintain laboratory space and equipment to ensure proper operation and cleanliness.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations, biosafety protocols, and institutional guidelines.
- Assist in drafting technical reports, experiment protocols, and quantitative result summaries.
- Coordinate the ordering and replenishing of lab supplies to ensure the smooth operation of research activities in Dr. Ferguson's lab.
- Aids Dr. Ferguson and his team in basic bioinformatics data collection and analysis to support the overall study objectives and research goals.
- Work closely with postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and principal investigators to support ongoing projects.
- Attend and participate in lab meetings, journal clubs, and departmental seminars.
- Knowledge of organizing research lab notes.
- Ability to analyze research results.
- Ability to report results to the PI and in laboratory meetings.
- Ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner orally and in writing.
- High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
- Prior work experience not required.
- Previous research experience (internship, independent study).
- Familiarity with sequencing methods and analyses.
- Familiarity with literature search and writing review articles.
