Schedule: (4) 10 hour work days with variable start times.

Job Requirements:

In the hospital/clinic -

  • Oversee treatment of animals, often in emergency situations brought in through our nationally recognized Emergency Animal Medical Technicians to provide accurate care instructions to team of clinic technicians.
  • Provide care for all shelter animals in our system. This includes general surgery, dentistry, spay/neuter surgeries, and medicine.
  • Perform physical exams, diagnostics, therapeutics, and determine appropriate disposition for animals in Animal Assistance. This includes stray animals, surrendered animals, and animals from our Reachout partners. Our doctors also evaluate pets brought in for Owner Requested Euthanasia.
  • Work with our foster department to manage the care of our shelter animals in foster homes. This may include owned animals in our Project Home Away From Home or Project Active Duty programs.

Administrative -

  • Maintain all medical records.
  • Be a mentor for staff, volunteers, and other agencies.
  • Help train the next generation of DVMs
    - We have rotating University of Arizona students and are starting an internship and residency program in shelter medicine.
  • Assist other departments with situations involving the welfare of the animals, such as testifying in court, appearing in media releases, providing necessary documentation regarding the health of the animals, and other situations requiring medical expertise.
  • Doctors rotate the on-call phone to counsel our foster and overnight team with emergency situations that may arise.
  • Work with Director of Veterinary Medicine to ensure we are providing an excellent experience for all animals in our care.
  • Attend seminars to satisfy continuing education requirements for Arizona D.V.M. license renewal.
  • Maintain DEA license.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education / Certifications / Licenses:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine OR Veterinary Medical Doctor Degree
  • Must be licensed to practice in Arizona.

Experience:

  • 2-3 years of experience in a veterinary practice with emphasis on surgery skills preferred.
