Duties:

  • Assessment & Diagnosis:
    Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including medical histories, physical exams, and diagnostic testing.
  • Diagnosis:
    Identify and diagnose acute, chronic, and complex health conditions.
  • Treatment Planning:
    Develop individualized care plans that address patient needs, including treatment goals and expected outcomes.
  • Prescribing:
    Prescribe medications, therapies, and medical devices.

Selectee may be subject to a probationary period. U.S. Citizenship is required. Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959. This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101‑630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. The agency must ensure that persons hired for these positions have not been found guilty of or pleaded nolo contend ere or guilty to certain crimes.

IHS Selectees whose duties and responsibilities require them to work permanently, temporarily, or occasionally in an IHS healthcare facility must comply with the IHS Employee Immunization Policy related to vaccine‑preventable diseases. Vaccine exemption requests may be available. The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. On‑call hours or standby duty may be required.

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education to perform the duties of the specific position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part‑time experience. The Hiring Manager/Selecting Official may elect to utilize flexibility for applicants currently enrolled and expected to complete the required education and obtain the required licensure within 9 months of applying.

Basic Requirements:

  • Education:

    A graduate or higher‑level degree, bachelor’s, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program.
  • Foreign Nursing School:
    Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools for graduates from foreign schools.
  • Advanced Practice Nurse Positions:
    Applicants must possess a graduate or higher‑level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position.
  • Licensure:
    Must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination and possess a full, unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Additional License Requirements for Advanced Practice Nurse Positions:
    Must be licensed or registered in the clinical specialty required by the position.

Minimum Qualifications: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service.

Accountability for approving work as a nurse practitioner includes analyzing and interpreting patients’ histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses and prescribe medications. Provide emergency services, crisis intervention, and collaborate with health care professionals to develop treatment protocols and standards of practice. Provide APN expertise consultation when requested and lead quality improvement activities.
