Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, Manufacturing Engineer

What We're Looking For:The Brazer is responsible for assembling and joining copper piping and refrigeration components used in the manufacturing of HVAC water chillers. This role performs high-quality brazing of refrigerant circuits to ensure strong, leak-free joints that meet engineering specifications, safety standards, and manufacturing quality requirements.
Working as part of the mechanical assembly team, the Brazer installs refrigeration piping, performs system pressure and evacuation tests, and supports the assembly of chiller units. The role requires strong attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to work with brazing equipment in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
The ideal candidate will have experience with copper brazing, refrigeration piping, and HVAC equipment assembly, with a strong commitment to safety and quality workmanship.
This hire will be required to travel to Montreal, Canada for approximately 4 weeks of training, provided by Smardt.
What You’ll Do:Brazing and Refrigeration Circuit Assembly
- Perform brazing of copper piping and refrigeration components using open flame torches and approved brazing materials.
- Join copper tubing and piping to create strong, leak-free joints in accordance with engineering specifications and manufacturing procedures.
- Assemble and install refrigerant piping systems used in water chiller units.
- Ensure brazed joints meet quality standards and are free from leaks, contamination, or structural defects.
- Conduct leak testing of refrigerant circuits, including pressure testing and system evacuation.
- Assist with refrigerant transfer and charging preparation in accordance with industry best practices and safety standards.
- Verify integrity of refrigeration piping systems prior to system commissioning.
- Assist with mechanical assembly of HVAC chiller units, including installation of piping, valves, fittings, and components.
- Organize and prepare materials and parts for assembly.
- Read and interpret technical drawings and piping layouts to ensure correct installation of components.
- Support production teams to ensure manufacturing schedules and quality standards are maintained.
- Follow all company safety procedures and brazing best practices when working with open flame equipment.
- Inspect completed brazed joints to verify quality and compliance with manufacturing specifications.
- Maintain brazing equipment and tools in safe working condition.
- Identify and report defects, leaks, or assembly issues to supervisors.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas.
Experience:
- Minimum 3 years of brazing experience in HVAC, refrigeration, piping, or mechanical manufacturing environments preferred
- Experience working with copper piping and refrigeration circuits is an asset
- Experience in HVAC equipment manufacturing, refrigeration systems, or industrial piping is highly desirable
- Candidates with experience in HVAC installation, refrigeration service, pipe fitting, plumbing, or mechanical assembly are encouraged to apply.
Certifications:
- Technical training, trade school, or relevant work experience preferred
- Refrigerant handling certification is considered an asset
- Refrigeration mechanic or HVAC trade certification is an advantage
Skills:
- Ability to braze copper joints using open flame torches
- Knowledge of refrigeration piping systems and brazing techniques
- Understanding of pressure testing and system evacuation procedures
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, piping diagrams, and assembly instructions
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to use hand tools and assembly equipment
- Strong attention to detail and workmanship
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong safety awareness when working with heat and pressurized systems
- Good communication and problem-solving skills
- Ability to adapt to a fast-paced manufacturing environment
- Candidates with HVAC or mechanical assembly experience who are willing to learn brazing are encouraged to apply. Training may be provided for qualified candidates.
