Salary Range: $85,000–$105,000 (DOE)
Downtown Phoenix Inc. (DPI) is a community-building nonprofit dedicated to creating a vibrant, safe, and welcoming Downtown Phoenix for those who live, work, learn, and play in our district. Through enhanced municipal services, marketing and event production, and collaboration with our affiliate organizations, DPI plays a key role in shaping one of the nation’s great urban centers.
We’re seeking a Director of People & Culture to serve as a leader and trusted advisor, responsible for shaping and executing DPI’s people strategy while supporting a positive, inclusive, and high‑performing workplace.
About the RoleThe Director of People & Culture provides hands‑on leadership across talent acquisition, employee relations, culture, and compliance, while partnering closely with executive leadership and managers. This role owns skilled, judgment‑based people work and is supported by a People & Operations Coordinator who assists with administrative, onboarding, and operational tasks.
This is an ideal role for an experienced HR leader who enjoys balancing strategy with execution and wants to make a meaningful impact in a mission‑driven organization.
Key Responsibilities- Lead full‑cycle recruitment, including screening and first‑round interviews
- Guide employee relations, performance management, and people‑related decision‑making
- Support managers through performance conversations and team challenges
- Oversee onboarding strategy and employee engagement initiatives
- Partner with Finance on benefits administration and annual renewal processes
- Serve as DPI’s internal Predictive Index (PI) Champion in collaboration with an external PI consultant
- Ensure compliance with employment laws and HR best practices
- Support organizational change and culture‑building efforts
- 5–7 years of progressive HR or people operations experience
- Demonstrated experience leading recruitment and employee relations work
- Strong judgment, emotional intelligence, and communication skills
- Experience in nonprofit or mission‑driven organizations preferred
- SHRM‑CP, SHRM‑SCP, or other relevant HR certification preferred
- WIlling to work onsite in Downtown Phoenix office
