The unpaid student nurse extern performs delegated tasks of direct and indirect patient care under the direct supervision of a registered nurse preceptor. The delegated tasks are those that have been taught in academic programs and/or orientation, are within the functions allowed by law to be performed by unlicensed personnel, and that the individual has demonstrated competence to the designated nurse.

Under the direction of the preceptor, the extern has the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and appropriately interpret information relative to the patient's age-specific needs.

Applicants must be able to complete 8 consecutive weeks of the program. We are unable to work around school or work schedules during the 8 weeks of the program.

NOTE: if your BLS is due to expire during the externship, you must renew your card prior to the first day of the program (5/26/26).

Nursing Programs must be accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
