* Supervises all Histology technician and technologists and oversees all histology activities, Immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing and chromogenic in-situ hybridization (CISH) testing.
* Performs routine histology tasks such as microtomy and embedding, as well as Immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing and chromogenic in-situ hybridization (CISH) testing if needed to support workflow.
* Manages all regulatory aspects of analytical testing, including the development of SOPs, training of staff, and implementation of lab procedures to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations.
* Performs mid-year and end of year personnel performance evaluation reviews and coaching.
* Monitor test analysis and specimen examination to ensure acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
* Follows the laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test performance and analysis.
* Performs and documents internal and external proficiency testing (PT).
* Adheres to the laboratory’s quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
* Follows the laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable level of performance.
* Documents all corrective action taken when a test system deviates from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
* Assists with the tracking, accumulation, and computation of performance metrics.
* Demonstrates the ability to accurately prioritize and triage specimens, handles and disposes of specimens and chemical waste based on the laboratory’s procedural manual, and ensures compliance with regulatory agencies.
* Ensures lab has adequate inventories of reagents and supplies.
* Resolves employee relations issues and recommends disciplinary action when required.
* Works with Human resources to manage employee adherence to performance and attendance policies. Delivers difficult conversations and disciplinary actions when needed.
* Acts as first point of contact on technical, procedural, and policy questions. Keeps team informed of new processes and general updates.
* Provides oversight for routine histology functions inclusive of grossing, processing, embedding, microtomy and staining.
* Assists as needed to perform other related duties and special projects to support other departments as required.
* Accepts other duties as assigned.
* 2+ years of experience in and IHC/Histology laboratory.
* Demonstrates strong technical, leadership, and decision-making skills.
* HT/HLT (ASCP) certification required.
* Must meet one of the following qualifications:
* Master’s or bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution
* Equivalent education and training
* Have laboratory training that includes:
* Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES or the CAAHEP;
* Experience in a leadership role preferred.
* QIHC is strongly advised.
* Will work at a computer some of the time as well as need to keep inventory and ordering records requiring the use of copiers, fax machines, and PDF scanners.
* Visual acuity and analytical skill to distinguish fine detail and ability to pass a visual color discrimination test.
* Manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment and perform sterile techniques as required.
* Must possess ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
* Must possess ability to perform repetitive motion.
* Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
* May have exposure to high noise levels in the data center, fumes and bio-hazardous material in the lab environment. Exposure to formaldehyde, xylene, DAB, and alcohol which emit fumes. The formaldehyde, xylene, and DAB are carcinogenic.
* May be required to handle blood-borne pathogens and general laboratory reagents.
* Must possess ability to use a microscope for extended periods of time.
* May have exposure to extreme temperatures, high noise levels, fumes, and biohazardous material/chemicals including formalin in the lab environment.
