Position Summary

This position may be located within a Hospital Facility, Patient Service Center (PSC), In‑Office Phlebotomy (IOP) or Mobile Diagnostic Services (MDS). It may provide coverage at multiple locations. Responsibilities include collection and receipt of biological specimens, proper entry into the company’s computer system, preparation of samples for analytical testing, and distribution to the appropriate analytical area. The role also performs specified analytical testing as assigned, following the Code of Conduct and all applicable policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements.

Core

Functions
  • Collect specimens, process them in the general laboratory or referral laboratory, ensuring correct patient and specimen identification and integrity using appropriate techniques for all age criteria. In IOP locations, manage client relationships within compliance regulations to meet business objectives.
  • Enter and verify patient demographics, location, physician data, tests requested, time and date of collection, clinical information, and other pertinent data. Verify accuracy of entered information and appropriateness of specimens received. Aliquot and label specimens, deliver to the technical area or perform initial processing, and assist in monitoring workflow and training new employees.
  • Focus on quality by ensuring all work is accurate and complete, completing documents legibly and accurately per site protocol, following established methods, maintaining familiarity with departmental procedures, and recording communications appropriately. Initiate computer‑generated reports for patient reporting and quality assurance monitoring. Meet departmental standards for productivity and quality as defined, and actively participate in committees or Six Sigma teams.
  • Participate in departmental financial responsibilities, using supplies and materials appropriately, avoiding excessive waste, and taking part in initiatives to reduce costs and improve service. Possess basic billing knowledge and a commitment to an error‑free work environment.
  • Communicate courteously and professionally with internal and external customers, interacting with co‑workers with an emphasis on teamwork and customer service. Resolve basic service issues, attend meetings, and remain current with internal/external communications such as e‑mail and newsletters.
  • Acknowledge and understand the importance of 'Patient Rights' and privacy (HIPAA).

    Physical Demands/Environment Factors

    Must be able to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently. Required to lift, push and/or pull up to 25 pounds. Requires manual dexterity, use of standard precautions due to exposure to blood and bodily fluids, chemical, electrical and biological hazards. Must distinguish colors, take directions, assimilate instructions quickly, and use computers, printers, copiers, telephone, fax, and department‑specific equipment.
