Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) regulates tribal gaming, event wagering, fantasy sports, horse racing, and pari‑mutuel/simulcast wagering, and unarmed combat sports; investigates illegal off‑reservation activities; and provides and supports prevention, education, and treatment programs for people and families affected by problem gambling through its Division of Problem Gambling (DPG).

Job Summary

The Intelligence Unit Special Agent works under the direction of the Intelligence Unit Supervisor and Manager. Special Agents investigate complaints of illegal gambling to ensure compliance with the Arizona Tribal‑State Gaming Compact, State, and Federal laws. Off‑Reservation complaints may involve gambling violations, racketeering, money laundering, and illegal criminal enterprises.

Job Duties
  • Conduct criminal investigations of alleged violations of the Arizona Tribal‑State Gaming Compact, State, and Federal laws.
  • Document, gather, and preserve evidence for criminal and civil prosecution.
  • Work undercover and use surveillance techniques and equipment to document criminal activity.
  • Conduct interviews of witnesses and confidential informants, prepare complex affidavits and search warrants, and testify in hearings, grand juries, and court proceedings.
  • Participate in the execution of search warrants, arrest warrants, and make arrests where appropriate.
  • Carry a firearm pursuant to ADG policy and ensure the health, safety, and welfare of the public and gaming tribes.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)
  • Knowledge of the Arizona Tribal‑State Compact and Appendices.
  • Knowledge of the Arizona Revised Statutes, including A.R.S. and applicable federal laws.
  • Proper case management and ability to present information intelligently in court.
  • Recognize potential public safety issues in public places with large populations.
  • Recognize potential threats and dangers associated with undercover work.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement procedures for surveillance, undercover operations, and evidence handling.
Skills
  • Basic computer and excellent writing skills to prepare reports and affidavits per gambling laws.
  • Gather facts, organize and interpret information for operational duties.
  • Understand investigative techniques and possess interview skills for clear, factual reports.
  • Basic understanding of the Tribal‑State Compact relevant to assigned duties.
  • General knowledge of game strategy and betting techniques.
Abilities
  • Qualify annually with duty weapon; minimum score of 210.
  • Complete 8 hours of continuing education annually.
  • Complete 8 hours of proficiency training every 3 years.

    Perform static and mobile surveillance on foot or in vehicles.
  • Effect an arrest or survive an encounter until backup arrives.
  • Possess better than average communication and observation skills.
Selective Preference
  • Previous certified peace officer in Arizona or another state, with training comparable to the Arizona basic course and meeting all certification requirements.
  • Unrestricted current certification by the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZ P.O.S.T), or eligibility to obtain certification via the AZPOST waiver within 6 months of hire.
  • Former sworn police officer; applicant must be a current or former sworn officer.
  • Prior police undercover experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in interview, interrogation, search warrant drafting, affidavit drafting, and court testimony.
Pre‑Employment Requirements
  • Criminal history investigation.
  • Current, valid state‑issued driver’s license.
  • Maintain acceptable driving records and complete required driver training for state business.
  • Pass a polygraph examination.
