The Dean of Student Affairs is responsible for guiding strategic and innovative efforts that advance the college's enrollment management goals, support student success and completion, and enhance student engagement. The Dean of Student Affairs provides direct supervision of core enrollment areas, including but not limited to Admissions & Records, Financial Aid, and Recruitment and Outreach. The position oversees student and employee matters in support of institutional success and leads the planning and execution of college-wide events and initiatives.
The Dean actively leads and participates in college and system-wide committees, collaborates with members of the SMCC community to advance the best interests of the division and the college, and fosters a culture of care.
Essential Functions
40% - Leadership and Student Affairs: provides strategic oversight for the managing, planning, organizing, supervising, and evaluating of assigned student support services areas; organizes, assigns, reviews, and evaluates the work of assigned directors and staff; supports and reinforces a positive, productive work environment centered around accountability, empowerment, respect, and trust; promotes of a shared vision within Student Affairs that is student-centered and employee-focused;
implements employee training and development; develops, administers, and enforces policies and standards pertaining to assigned areas; directs, plans, leads, and conducts the research necessary for the evaluation and improvement of student affairs events, programs, and services; responds to and helps resolve student care, conduct, complaint, and grievance matters; serves as a lead for the Behavior Intervention Team (BIT), Strategic Enrollment Management Team, and other committees, taskforces, and/or work groups as assigned;
assists with Title IX or other investigations; stays abreast, understands, interprets, and applies up-to-date knowledge of laws, codes, regulations, standards, and policies related to areas of oversight; remains compliant with reporting standards with the district, state, and federal regulations.
30% - Strategic Enrollment Management: provides leadership in the development, implementation, and monitoring of all college-wide enrollment services; develops and implements student enrollment processes that meet strategic priorities and establishes targeted approaches responsive to the evolving needs of higher education; analyzes qualitative and quantitative data to design, develop, and implement enrollment management strategies that meet student enrollment and retention targets; works in conjunction with MCCCD on system-wide enrollment initiatives, builds partnerships with external stakeholders, educational partners, and four-year institutions to create transfer pathways for students completing or expressing an interest to transfer;
analyzes weekly enrollment reports to keep college administration, faculty and staff informed of critical enrollment trends and decisions; develop marketing and promotional material to increase awareness and visibility of SMCC academic and support programs and services; coordinates tracking systems, data collection, analysis and follow-up of student records, department plans and other records; collaborates with students, faculty, staff, and others in resolving student matters.
20% - Budget & Operational Planning: administers and monitors departmental budget; prepares, recommends and manages operating budget for areas of assignment; interprets and resolves technical and complex issues and problems related to budget and operational planning to ensure effective and efficient use of technology and college resources; participates in the college's strategic planning, annual budget review process, and program assessment and evaluative procedures for the areas of oversight.
10% - College and District-wide Initiatives:
Acts as representative of the division by serving on college and/or district committees; develops, supports, and maintains relationships with academic affairs, administrative services, administration, student services, business, industry, national organizations, community, and educational partners; handles other Student Affairs administrative responsibilities and student and employee matters as assigned.
