Summary: Under direct supervision, incumbent provides assistance to teachers in a diverse classroom environment by preparing materials for special education students, working with students individually or in groups on special projects, demonstrating skills and techniques, communicating parent concerns, inputting lesson plans, photocopying materials, and preparing classrooms. The incumbent also monitors students in playground and cafeteria settings.
Essential Functions- Work with special education students individually or in groups on projects or assignments to develop academic, social, emotional, functional, language, and behavior skills and activities of daily living; demonstrate skills and techniques to aid learning; monitor behavior and enforce school and classroom standards.
- Assist students with feeding, toileting, physical activities, instruction, and behavior management; use adaptive equipment; analyze instructional assessment data to plan instruction.
- Maintain discipline by monitoring behavior, issuing warnings, writing formal notices, and preparing incident documentation.
- Monitor safety on playground and cafeteria before school, during breakfast and lunch, and during recess; report incidents; accompany students to other areas and buses.
- Prepare classrooms for activities, set up tables and chairs, distribute materials, and clean up after activities.
- Communicate with parents regarding progress and concerns, interpreting communications as needed.
- Copy and prepare educational materials.
- Assist teachers in planning and coordinating lesson plans by sharing ideas and providing feedback.
- Perform other duties as required.
To be eligible:
- High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) prior to hiring.
- Must receive CPR certification within thirty days of hire date.
- Completion of 60 College Credit Hours, Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university, or successful passage of an Arizona State approved paraprofessional test; offered by WESD at no cost and must pass prior to being hired. Contact HR for more information.

Preferred but not required:
- Six months experience working with children in a learning environment.
Regularly use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; stand; walk; sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; occasionally climb or balance; lift or move up to 50 pounds. Required vision abilities include close, distance, peripheral vision, depth perception, and adjustable focus.
Working ConditionsOccasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions; moderate noise level.
