Preschool Substitute Teacher, West Valley – Legacy Traditional Schools

Position Overview

The Pre-Kindergarten Substitute Lead Teacher provides a caring, safe, and well-managed environment for children to participate in learning activities and imaginative play. The teacher delivers instruction in basic skills such as color, shape, number, and letter recognition, as well as social skills. The Lead Teacher establishes clear objectives for all lessons, prepares and leads instruction, and evaluates children’s academic performance and social development.

The Lead Teacher communicates with parents/guardians about progress and ensures enforcement of district policies for Pre-K programs. The Substitute Teacher will perform administrative duties such as attending staff meetings and professional development, preparing student progress reports, supervising and evaluating teacher assistants, and inventorying equipment, materials, and supplies.

Key Duties & Accountabilities (Substitute Pre-K Teacher)
  • Develop and implement fun, age-appropriate activities and lessons for young children.
  • Create daily lesson plans tailored to preschoolers’ needs.
  • Assist children individually or in small groups with reading, writing, language, numbers, and alphabet skills.
  • Adapt activities and materials to support learning objectives and classroom goals.
  • Provide support during lunchtime, toileting, and other daily routines.
  • Encourage and model proper cleanup behavior after activities.
  • Maintain a clean, organized classroom and sanitize surfaces; keep records as needed.
  • Prepare instructional materials such as laminated resources, posters, copies, and bulletin boards.
  • Foster a nurturing and secure environment for young students.
  • Report observations and incidents to appropriate staff.
  • Maintain open communication with parents/guardians and involve them in their child’s progress.
  • Assist families with transitions between home and school and between classroom settings.
  • Supervise students in various settings to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Keep Teachers Assistants informed about classroom activities, policies, and procedures.
  • Provide training and guidance to classroom staff, interns, substitutes, and volunteers as needed.
Qualifications

Education, Licensure, or Certification

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Food Handlers Card/Certification.
  • Valid IVP Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card (or ability to obtain and hold).
  • Criminal history background check clearance required.
  • CPR/First Aid Certified.
  • Five days availability.
  • 6 months or more experience in an Early Childhood setting.

Specialized Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Positively interact with all students and create a safe learning environment.
  • Design lesson plans to meet student needs and state requirements.
  • Employ varied teaching strategies and best practices to teach the curriculum.
  • Identify individual student needs and communicate effectively with students, coworkers, administration, and parents.
  • Collaborate with other teachers and school staff; maintain a flexible work schedule and professional appearance.
  • Commit to professional development to improve education quality.

Background Checks

  • Criminal history background check is required.
  • Must be able to obtain and hold a valid IVP Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card at all times.

Physical & Work Environment

  • Occasional travel between campuses.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds; regular movement including sitting, standing, kneeling, and long periods of concentration.
  • Local and in-state travel as needed.
