Spring 2026 After‑School Literacy Program Coach
Title: After‑School Literacy Program Coach
Work Hours: part‑time; 5‑10 hours per week
Pay: $18/hour starting
FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt
Reports to: Program Coordinator
Read Better Be Better (RBBB) is a nonprofit organization based in Phoenix, Arizona, founded in 2014 as a response to the state's literacy crisis. Our mission is to connect young readers and youth leaders to inspire a love of literacy and leadership. Our vision is a world in which empowered communities demand equitable access to foundational skills. Our values are simple:
Be Excellent, Be Kind!
For our Spring 2026 term, Read Better Be Better is looking for part‑time (5‑10 hours/week), passionate After‑School Literacy Program Coaches to facilitate our reading program. Coaches guide and mentor a cohort of young readers and youth leaders. They may work during the school day or in a dynamic after‑school club atmosphere, including our Community‑Based (CBO) programs held in public libraries across Arizona.
The environment is fast‑paced and engaging, full of reading, learning, and games. Program Coaches complete essential paid training and onboarding before beginning at their assigned site.
In the RBBB K‑1 Program, coaches train 4th‑5th grade “Leaders” in RBBB's curriculum to help build reading confidence in Kindergarten and 1st‑grade “Readers.” In the RBBB 2‑3 Program, coaches train middle school “Leaders” to support reading confidence growth in their 2nd‑3rd grade “Readers.”
Coaches facilitate the literacy program, monitor curriculum progress, and help maintain a safe and supportive learning environment. Weekly meetings with the Program Coordinator are held either virtually or in person to share successes, discuss challenges, and gather needed materials. Coaches also participate in professional development workshops throughout the semester. Each term concludes with a graduation celebration at the assigned location. Coaches are encouraged to continue for future terms.
QualificationsMust have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Preferred candidates have prior experience working with children in educational, tutoring, mentoring, or program facilitation settings, or are enrolled in a relevant degree program (e.g., teaching, early childhood or youth development, education, social work). We look for individuals who can engage and motivate students in a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment, and support students in delivering program activities.
This position is for the Spring 2026 term, which begins on January 26th. Coach training sessions will be held between January 12th and January 24th, and you can select the training date that works best for your schedule. A minimum commitment of 5 hours per week is expected for the duration of the term. Coaches work two days per week at the assigned location (e.g., Monday/Wednesday, Monday/Thursday, or Tuesday/Thursday afternoons), plus a one‑hour weekly meeting, held either virtually or at a central location.
Opportunities to substitute at additional sites may be available for those interested in working more hours.
Coaches will be assigned to one of our partnering program sites for the semester. In addition to CBO programs in public libraries across Arizona, we also operate in school districts throughout the East Valley, West Valley, and Central Phoenix.
