Purpose StatementThe job of Teacher - Special Education is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional process by serving as a teacher with specific responsibility for developing students with special needs success in academics, interpersonal skills and/or activities of daily living; supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines;
collaborating with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues; and responding to a wide range of inquiries from students' parents or guardians regarding instructional program and student progress.
- Administers developmental testing programs, subject specific assessments, and first aid assistance for medically fragile children.
- Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress and provides expectations.
- Assesses student progress towards objectives and provides feedback to students, parents and administration.
- Collaborates with instructional staff, parents and community resources to improve overall quality of student outcomes.
- Counsels students to improve performance, health status and problem solving techniques.
- Demonstrates pedagogical approaches that engage learners and provide an effective program addressing individual student requirements.
- Differentiates classroom work for individualized learning programs.
- Directs assistant teachers, paraprofessionals and volunteers to provide effective classroom program.
- Instructs students to improve success in academic, interpersonal and daily living skills.
- Maintains confidential and non‑confidential records in accordance with administrative guidelines.
- Manages student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
- Monitors students in various educational settings for safety and positivity.
- Orders supplies and equipment as needed.
- Participates in meetings such as IEPs, staff and PLC teams to review data and instructional practices.
- Prepares written materials such as attendance, anecdotal records, IEPs to document student progress.
- Reports health and safety issues to the administrator and appropriate agencies.
- Responds to emergency situations and inquires from teachers, parents and administrators.
- Serves as case manager for special education students and manages IEPs.
- Supports classroom teachers in implementing curriculum and individual student plans.
- Applying assessment instruments and operating standard office equipment.
- Reading technical information and composing documents.
- Applying knowledge of appropriate codes, policies, regulations and laws.
- Managing behavior and implementing behavioral management strategies.
- Adapting to changing work priorities and exhibiting tact and patience.
Working under limited supervision using standardized practices and methods. Directing other persons within a small work unit. Utilizing resources from other work units as often required.
EducationBachelor’s degree in a job‑related area.
