The job of Teacher - Special Education is done for the purpose of providing support to the instructional process by serving as a teacher with specific responsibility for developing students with special needs success in academics, interpersonal skills and/or activities of daily living; supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines;
collaborating with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues; and responding to a wide range of inquiries from students' parents or guardians regarding instructional program and student progress.
- Administers developmental testing programs, subject specific assessments, etc. for the purpose of assessing student competency levels and/or developing individual learning plans.
- Administers, under supervision, first aid and assistance to medically fragile children for the purpose of providing appropriate care for children as assigned.
- Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of communicating expectations; student's achievements; developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
- Assesses student progress towards objectives, expectations, and/or goals for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration.
- Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents and community resources for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes and achieving classroom objectives.
- Counsels students for the purpose of improving performance, health status and problem solving techniques.
- Demonstrates pedagogical approaches that engage learners and address individual student requirements.
- Differentiates classroom work to address individualized learning programs.
- Directs assistant teachers, paraprofessionals, volunteers and/or student workers to support an effective classroom program.
- Instructs students to improve success in academics, interpersonal and daily living skills.
- Maintains confidential and non-confidential files and records for up-to-date reference and compliance.
- Manages student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
- Monitors students in various educational environments for safety and positive learning experience.
- Participates in meetings (IEPs, staff, etc.) and on PLC teams to support instructional practices and data review.
- Prepares written materials (attendance, anecdotal records, IEPs) documenting student progress and meeting requirements.
- Reports health and safety issues to appropriate authorities to maintain safety and regulatory compliance.
- Responds to emergency situations and inquiries from stakeholders to resolve issues and provide direction.
- Serves as case manager for special education students to manage IEPs in accordance with guidelines.
- Supports classroom teachers in implementing established curriculum and individual student plans.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient operation of the work unit.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in a job-related area.
- Certificates and Licenses: Arizona Teaching Certificate;
Appropriately Certified in Core Content Area; SEI Endorsement Required. - Continuing Education/Training/Clearances: CPR, First Aid, Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance, CPI Clearance Card (or ability to obtain district-sponsored training).

apply assessment instruments; operate standard office equipment and software; maintain accurate records. - KNOWLEDGE: education standards, codes/policies/regulations, child development stages, behavioral management, lesson planning, instructions alignment.
- ABILITY: manage multiple activities, work with diverse individuals, analyze data, maintain confidentiality, adapt to changing priorities, solve problems, build relationships.
Physical demands include lifting, carrying, and other activities; typical distribution of physical effort; environment with some exposure to risk. Specifics: 10% sitting, 50% walking, 40% standing.
