Overview

The job of Teacher - Special Education is performed to support the instructional process by serving as a teacher with responsibility for developing students with special needs' success in academics, interpersonal skills and activities of daily living; supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, professional staff, and administrators;

and communicating with students  parents or guardians regarding instructional program and student progress.

Essential Functions / Responsibilities
  • Administers developmental testing programs and subject-specific assessments to assess student competency levels and/or develop individual learning plans.
  • Administers, under supervision, first aid and assistance to medically fragile children as assigned.
  • Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress and communicates expectations, achievements, and methods for improvement at home.
  • Assesses student progress toward objectives and goals to provide feedback to students, parents, and administration.
  • Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents and community resources to improve student outcomes and meet classroom objectives.
  • Counsels students to improve performance, health status, problem solving techniques, and personal issues.
  • Demonstrates pedagogical approaches that engage learners and addresses individual student requirements.
  • Differentiates classroom work to address individualized learning programs.
  • Directs assistant teachers, student teachers, paraprofessionals, volunteers and/or student workers to support the classroom program and student needs.
  • Instructs students to improve success in academic, interpersonal and daily living skills.
  • Maintains confidential and non-confidential files and records in accordance with guidelines and legal requirements.
  • Manages student behavior to create a safe and conducive learning environment.
  • Monitors students in multiple educational settings to ensure safety and positive learning experiences.
  • Orders supplies and equipment to ensure availability as needed.
  • Participates in meetings (e.g., IEPs, staff) to gather and convey information required to perform functions.
  • Participates on PLC teams to review data and instructional practices.
  • Prepares written materials (attendance, anecdotal records, IEPs, etc.) documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements.
  • Reports health and safety issues to the administrator and appropriate agencies to maintain student safety and compliance.
  • Responds to emergency situations to resolve safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel.
  • Responds to inquiries from teachers, parents, administrators, and others to resolve issues and provide information.
  • Serves as case manager for special education students, managing IEPs in accordance with guidelines and legal requirements.
  • Supports classroom teachers in implementing established curriculum and individual student plans.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge And Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex tasks and to upgrade skills as needed. Specific skills include applying assessment instruments, operating standard office equipment and software, and maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of algebra/geometry, reading technical information, composing documents, facilitating group discussions, and analyzing situations. Includes knowledge of codes, policies, regulations/laws, age-appropriate activities, lesson plan requirements, child development stages, behavioral management strategies, and instructional methods.

ABILITY
