Job DescriptionASU Health seeks a motivated and skilled Communications Specialist to strategically and creatively develop content that advances the reputation of ASU Health, its academic units, and partner schools. The incumbent will be a strong writer and storyteller, pursuing and developing newsworthy stories, coordinating social media content with the Social Media Manager, creating email content, and ensuring content is leveraged across digital and print platforms.
Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Communications, the role will develop and maintain an editorial calendar, pitch story ideas, seek leads, write and create content, and work closely with other Strategic Marketing and Events team members, faculty and staff, and external partners. The position may supervise freelance writers and student workers. Candidates who reach the final interview round will provide 3–5 writing samples.
Range
$51,500 – $55,000 per year; depends on experience.
Essential Duties- Plan, develop, and write high‑quality feature stories showcasing ASU Health faculty, staff, students, research, and programs.
- Plan and write content for external email newsletters.
- Plan, write, and edit copy for email communications such as research conferences, event invitations, and confirmations.
- Leverage all communication channels (print, web, email, video, social media, events, etc.) to generate interest and advance ASU Health’s reputation.
- Develop content tailored for diverse audiences across channels to enhance visibility of ASU Health initiatives.
- Enhance storytelling with visuals such as photos and videos, coordinating with team members or vendors to obtain visuals.
- Liaise with ASU Media Relations and Strategic Communications to generate media coverage and coordinate reporter interviews with subject matter experts.
- Coach and edit the work of others, such as student workers and contractors.
- Ensure all copy meets university brand standards and Associated Press style.
- Advise on communication strategies and participate in strategic planning to advance ASU Health’s reputation and reach.
- Assist with special projects, events, and other duties as assigned.
- Show ability to quickly change priorities and resolve conflicts.
- Use critical thinking to make decisions and analyze/report data and results of tests.
- Use office equipment.
- Use an ASU or personal vehicle to travel to different campuses.
- Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
- Experience planning, developing, and producing creative, high‑quality communications content for multiple audiences and channels.
- Experience translating complicated or technical subjects into common language and interviewing subject matter experts.
- Experience working with members of the news media.
- Experience reviewing and editing written work of others.
- Multimedia storytelling skills, including taking quality photos and producing videos.
- Experience with social media platforms for journalistic or marketing uses.
- Experience planning and maintaining a regular editorial schedule and pitching stories to editors or supervisors.
- Experience working in a team environment and collaborating with multiple stakeholders.
- Experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, alumni, development teams, and community partners.
- Evidence of strategic thinking, proactive recommendations, and creative solutions to meet organizational goals.
