Job Description

FPS Civil, a 100% Employee‑Owned Company, is seeking a driven, hands‑on Accounting Controller to oversee all accounting operations and lead the accounting team. The ideal candidate will bring construction industry experience, expertise in Work‑in‑Progress (WIP) reporting, and an active CPA license. This role is designed for a high‑performing professional ready to make an impact in a dynamic, growth‑oriented environment.

Reporting directly to the CFO, the Accounting Controller will lead monthly close and audit processes, ensure GAAP and ERISA compliance (specifically, ESOP and 401(k) plan administration), and drive financial accuracy, compliance, and operational efficiency across the organization. Additionally, this individual will manage, mentor, and develop the accounting team, fostering a collaborative and accountable environment aligned with FPS Civil’s employee‑owned culture.

This position offers a clear pathway for future leadership advancement within the company. As FPS Civil continues to expand, the Accounting Controller will have the opportunity to assume broader financial and operational leadership responsibilities. We are seeking a professional who demonstrates initiative, integrity, and a strong desire for long‑term growth—someone who is not only skilled in accounting excellence but also inspired by the potential to shape the future of the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare/manage journal entries and account reconciliations. Lead and complete the preparation and analysis of Work‑in‑Progress (WIP) schedules to ensure precise job costing and accurate percentage‑of‑completion revenue recognition. Develop and present monthly consolidated financial statements, ratio analyses, and key financial reports for the Executive Leadership team.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local legal requirements by monitoring legislative changes, enforcing adherence to regulations, filing reports, and advising management on necessary actions.
  • Ensure GAAP compliance and support ESOP/401(k) plan administration.
  • Mentor and lead accounting staff to promote growth, collaboration, and accountability.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for external auditors—directing audit preparation, coordination, and response activities.
  • Collaborate with project managers and leadership to provide actionable financial insights.
  • Support financial planning efforts by developing budgets, forecasts, financial models, and variance analyses to guide company strategy and operational efficiency.
  • Identify and implement process and system improvements to enhance scalability, accuracy, and overall efficiency of the accounting function.

  • Minimum of 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 2+ years in construction industry accounting.
  • Extensive knowledge of GAAP‑compliant financial reporting and construction accounting principles, including Work‑in‑Progress (WIP) accounting, job cost analysis, and percentage‑of‑completion revenue recognition.
  • Solid understanding of bonding requirements, lien waivers and releases (conditional and unconditional), subcontractor compliance, and multi‑entity accounting operations.
