Job Title: Assistant Recreation Director
Location: Bay View Association, Petoskey, MI
Reports To: Recreation Director
Employment Type: Seasonal (Full-Time During Assembly Season)

Position Summary

The Assistant Recreation Director plays a key leadership role in the planning, coordination, and delivery of Bay View’s multi‑faceted summer recreation program. This seasonal position supports the Recreation Director in overseeing daily operations, staff leadership, special events, and community traditions across all recreation areas, including youth programs, waterfront, tennis and pickleball, crafts, and special events. The Assistant Recreation Director combines administrative support with hands-on leadership, ensuring recreation programs are well‑organized, safe, engaging, and aligned with Bay View Recreation’s mission of Fun and Recreation for All.

Compensation

& Employment Details
  • Pay: $12,000
  • Employment Type: Seasonal, full‑time during Assembly Season. Housing is not provided.

Children of seasonal staff members may also receive select program discounts, encouraging family participation in campus life, subject to program guidelines. Not eligible for insurance, retirement, or other benefits.
Schedule
  • June 1–August 31: Full-time, on‑site presence required. Flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and special events.
Organization Overview

The Bay View Association (BVA) is a National Historic Landmark and an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit offering Chautauqua‑style programming in Performing Arts, Worship & Religious Life, Education, and Recreation. The Bay View community includes 444 Victorian cottages, 2 inns, 30 historic buildings, and approximately 900 members along the shores of Lake Michigan.

Key Responsibilities Program Leadership & Operations
  • Assist in the administration, supervision, and evaluation of all Recreation program areas.
  • Serve as a leader and mentor to area directors, head leaders, and seasonal staff, fostering teamwork, communication, and professionalism.
  • Act as the Recreation Director’s designee as needed, providing leadership coverage and serving as a liaison with staff, parents, members and participants.
  • Support coordination and communication across program areas to ensure efficient and unified operations.
Staff Support & Administration
  • Assist with seasonal staff recruitment, onboarding, training, and leadership development.
  • Support staff scheduling, payroll verification, and day-to-day personnel needs.
  • Maintain consistent communication with area directors to identify needs, address concerns, and ensure readiness for daily programming.
Events, Traditions & Community Engagement
  • Help plan, organize, and execute special events and long-standing Bay View traditions, including but not limited to Rec Teen Nights, Afternoon Recreation activities, the Sam Spade Hot Dog Roast, Awards Picnic, and Staff Dinner.
  • Assist with event logistics, setup, decorations, activities, and cleanup.
  • Ensure recreation programming reflects Bay View’s values and fosters positive community spirit across all ages.
Facilities, Equipment & Supplies
  • Assist in overseeing recreation facilities, equipment, and supplies to ensure safe, clean, and well-stocked program areas.
  • Coordinate purchasing, pickup, organization, and distribution of program supplies across recreation areas.
  • Help monitor facility conditions and report maintenance or safety concerns as needed.
Reporting & Planning
  • Contribute to end-of-season reports, staff evaluations, and planning for future seasons.
  • Provide feedback and recommendations to strengthen programming, staff development, and operational efficiency.
Qualifications
  • Previous experience in recreation, youth programming, community leadership, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, work independently, and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
