The Surgical First Assistant, as defined by the American College of Surgeons, provides exposure, hemostasis, and other technical functions to assist the surgeon in performing a safe operation with optimal patient outcomes. This role requires advanced knowledge of normal and pathological anatomy and physiology.

• Certification as a surgical technologist, demonstrating capability in training new colleagues and meeting national standards.
• Scrubs for cases following sterile procedures, changes into operative attire, dons sterile gown and gloves, and assists the surgeon accordingly.
• Assists in patient draping, maintaining sterile technique, provides visualization of the operative site, and assists with hemostasis.
• Passes instruments, sponges, sutures, and supplies as needed, anticipating the surgeon's needs to expedite procedures.
• Receives and properly handles surgical specimens.
• Performs sponge, needle, and instrument counts as per policy.
• Cleans the surgical suite following protocols, disposing of biohazardous waste appropriately.
• Assists with closure of body planes using appropriate techniques.
• Under surgeon’s direction, may procure in vivo conduits and perform other duties as assigned.
• Performs additional duties consistent with the role as directed by the surgeon.

Requirements include graduation from an accredited surgical technologist program, certification as a first assistant, and maintenance of certification through ongoing education. Candidates must have documented experience with a minimum of 150 surgical cases within a specialty and demonstrate advanced expertise in that area. BLS certification is also required.
