Position: Behavioral Mental Health Tech 7P-7A

Responsibilities

Behavioral Mental Health Tech at Poplar Springs Hospital – a 183‑bed acute care and residential facility dedicated to a full continuum of behavioral health services for adults, adolescents, and active-duty military. The facility is located in Petersburg, Virginia, on 25 acres of a serene, nature‑like setting that offers patients and families a calm environment to flourish.

We have a new opening for a Behavioral Mental Health Tech. The MHT will assist in providing safe, effective patient care under the direction of the Program Director/Manager and Unit Charge Nurse. Responsibilities include direct patient care, conducting effective health‑welfare checks, CPR and skillful interventions (S/R techniques), mentoring new hires and students in unit routines, performing assigned administrative duties, modeling respectful behavior to patients/residents, and demonstrating strong verbal and written communication skills.

Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Hours will vary; applicants must have flexibility with availability.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must demonstrate competency in the criteria listed in this job description. Staff must demonstrate flexibility for reassignment to units providing care to varied populations, including male and female children, adolescents, and adults with dual diagnoses. New hires must be able to learn concepts and develop skills within a reasonable timeframe through our orientation and training program.

Licensure

/ Certification / Registration
  • Valid driver’s license in good standing per UHS Transportation policy (strongly preferred)
  • CPR Preferred (offered on‑site)
  • Handle With Care Preferred (offered on‑site)
Education / Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree Preferred
General Requirements
  • Must be at least 21 years of age per Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Services.
  • Must have patience, tact, and a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm.
  • Good communication skills; must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Basic clerical skills and experience with office equipment (telephone, copy machine, fax, etc.); computer skills helpful.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to problem‑solve and accept feedback when circumstances warrant such actions.
  • Willingness to interact with patients with varying levels of cognitive functioning.
Skills
  • Human behavior or principles of psychology preferred, including therapeutic relationships & processes, age‑specific growth & development, limit setting, crisis & behavior management.
