PRN - Behavioral Mental Health Tech - 7a - 7p or 7p - 7a

Poplar Springs Hospital is a 183‑bed acute care and residential facility that has for more than 30 years been guided by its mission of helping those who need a full continuum of behavioral health services. The facility offers behavioral and psychological treatment for adults and adolescents through its acute programs, adolescent residential programs, and programs for active‑duty military. It is located in Petersburg, Virginia, 20 minutes south of Richmond and 50 minutes north of North Carolina, on 25 acres that provide a serene, nature‑like setting for patients and families.

The Behavioral Mental Health Tech assists in providing safe, effective patient care under the direction of the Program Director/Manager and Unit Charge Nurse. The Tech plays a significant role in direct patient care, contributes to a safe and therapeutic environment for patients/residents through effective HWC, CPR and S/R techniques, mentors new hires and students in unit routines, performs administrative duties as assigned, acts as a role model to patients/residents, demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills, and performs other duties as assigned.

Hours will vary and applicants must have flexibility with their availability.

Position Requirements: An individual must demonstrate competency in the criteria listed in this job description. Staff must demonstrate flexibility for reassignment to units caring for varied populations—including male and female children, adolescents, and adults— and must be willing to learn new concepts within a reasonable timeframe through the organization’s orientation and training program.

Licensure / Certification / Registration:

• Valid driver’s license in good standing (per UHS Transportation policy; strongly preferred)
• CPR (offered on‑site; preferred)
• Handle‑With‑Care (offered on‑site; preferred)

Education / Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree (preferred)

General Requirements:

• Must be at least 21 years of age (per Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Services)
• Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm
• Good communication skills; must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English
• Basic clerical skills and basic experience with office equipment (telephone, copy machine, fax, etc.); computer skills helpful
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
• Ability to problem‑solve and accept feedback when circumstances warrant such actions
• Willingness to interact with patients with varying levels of cognitive functioning

Skills:

• Human behavior or principles of psychology (preferred), including therapeutic relationships & processes, age‑specific growth & development, limit‑setting, crisis & behavior management
