Responsibilities

Behavioral Mental Health Tech

Poplar Springs Hospital is a 183‑bed acute care and residential facility that provides behavioral and psychological treatment for adults, adolescents, and active‑duty military. The Behavioral Mental Health Tech will assist in providing safe, effective patient care under the direction of the Program Director/Manager and Unit Charge Nurse. The role includes direct patient care, maintaining a therapeutic environment, using HWC, CPR, and S/R techniques, mentoring new hires and students, performing administrative duties, and serving as a role model to patients.

Hours vary; applicants must demonstrate flexibility with availability.

Qualifications

Position requirements: The applicant must demonstrate competency in the criteria listed in this job description and be flexible for reassignment to units caring for varied populations (children, adolescents, adults, dually diagnosed adults). Applicants must be able to learn required concepts and skills within a reasonable timeframe via the organization’s orientation and training program.

Licensure/Certification/Registration:

  • Valid driver’s license in good standing per UHS Transportation policy (preferred)
  • CPR (preferred; offered on‑site)
  • Handle With Care (preferred; offered on‑site)

Education/

Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

General requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age per Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Services
  • Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm
  • Good communication skills; must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language
  • Basic clerical skills and experience with office equipment; computer skills helpful
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Ability to problem‑solve and accept feedback when circumstances warrant such actions
  • Willingness to interact with patients with varying levels of cognitive functioning

Skills:

  • Knowledge of human behavior or principles of psychology preferred, including therapeutic relationships, age‑specific growth and development, limit setting, crisis and behavior management
