Research Scientist
You will be responsible for the successful production of archaeology and heritage inputs for the delivery of the Strategic Pipeline, reporting to the SPA Archaeology Discipline Lead. The initial phase involves producing archaeological risk‑mapping using ArcGIS and MS Excel to form a baseline understanding of potential project risk, which will inform the creation of Historic Environment Desk‑Based Assessments. Collaboration with the SPA Archaeology Team and other disciplines is essential to maintain technical consistency across the team and the SPA programme.
Responsibilities- Produce archaeological risk maps identifying areas of high, moderate and low risk.
- Utilise ArcGIS software without support.
- Collaborate with other SAT members and share updates with the team on a regular basis.
- Create Historic Environment Desk‑Based Assessments using data from risk‑mapping.
- Attend site walkovers, visit archives and record offices to gather baseline information.
- Use baseline and assessment data to inform the design of archaeological surveys and evaluations.
- Apply experience of archaeological fieldwork to inform the design of intrusive fieldwork where required.
- Support the SPA Archaeology Team (SAT) where needed, authoring written deliverables and producing supporting maps for specifications.
- Demonstrable experience producing archaeological and historic baselines, impact assessments and deliverable figures.
- Ability to use ArcGIS software to produce mapping and datasets.
- Collaborative mindset who facilitates the sharing of historic environment information across project and delivery teams.
- Personal responsibility for supporting programme delivery, particularly in adopting risk‑based approaches, cost control and programme management.
- Ability to work flexibly across several projects and meet required deadlines.
- Effective written and verbal communication, and organisational or analytical skills.
- Detail‑oriented, organised, and passionate about contributing to one of the UK’s most ambitious water infrastructure projects.
