School Caretaker - Temporary to Permanent

Are you an experienced School Caretaker looking for your next opportunity?
I am currently supporting a local school seeking a reliable, proactive and safety-conscious Caretaker to help ensure their site runs smoothly and remains a safe, welcoming environment for pupils, staff and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
As the School Caretaker, you will be responsible for:
Site Maintenance & Repairs
- Carrying out routine maintenance and minor repairs across plumbing, electrical, joinery and general building tasks.
- Completing preventative maintenance to keep the school safe and operational.
- Managing grounds maintenance such as lawn mowing, hedge trimming, weeding, planting and general outdoor upkeep.
Security & Safety
- Opening and locking the premises daily, ensuring full site security.
- Monitoring access to the site, responding to emergencies and dealing with alarm activations.
- Ensuring safeguarding and security procedures are always followed.
Health & Safety Compliance
- Completing statutory checks and tests including:
- Fire alarms
- Emergency lighting
- Water hygiene (including Legionella flushing)
- Asbestos monitoring (where applicable)
- Keeping accurate documentation in line with legislation and school policy.
- Identifying hazards, resolving issues and escalating risks appropriately.
Contractor & Facilities Management
- Liaising with contractors and estates teams.
- Issuing permits to work and providing site inductions.
- Verifying completion certificates and ensuring works comply with school standards.
Operational Support
- Monitoring and ordering maintenance and cleaning supplies.
- Setting up rooms, moving furniture and preparing facilities for school events and activities.
- Working collaboratively with school staff to support the smooth running of the school day.
About You
The ideal candidate will have:
- Previous experience as a School Caretaker, Premises Officer or similar facilities role.
- Strong understanding of health and safety, statutory checks, safeguarding and site security.
- Practical skills in general maintenance (plumbing, electrical, joinery, basic repairs).
- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work proactively and independently.
- A positive, hands-on attitude with good communication skills.
- Enhanced DBS and on the update checking service
