Job Title

Senior Design Engineer

Job Summary

We are currently seeking a Senior Design Engineer to join the Component Engineering Base Engine Team as we approach a period of significant investment to bring new products to the market. This role will be focused on design solutions to address challenging requirements, from projects within New Product Introduction. The successful candidate will serve as an experienced contributor on assignments that are complex in nature, working with individuals and teams across global manufacturing sites, suppliers and customers.

£57,000 - £76,000 (depending on experience)

Contract

24 months contract. 5 day in office model, ad-hoc flexibility is accommodated aligned with business needs.

Responsibilities
  • Design of cylinder heads and blocks for diesel and alternative fuel scenarios.
  • Work in a multi‑disciplined global team to ensure solutions meet customer, durability and functional requirements.
  • Develop relationships with suppliers.
  • Plan and manage project and sub‑project deliverables, lead.
  • Conduct risk assessment through FMEA generation on components and systems to identify and address design risks and determine validation needs.
  • Generate and conduct design reviews to gain wider approval.
  • Maintain communication with peers, team leader and stakeholders with progress against planned activities.
  • Develop drawings to Caterpillar standards and other technical data to support the release of parts for prototype and volume production.
  • Work with suppliers using APQP methodology and tools.
Computer‑Aided Design & Engineering
  • Expert level of expertise in complex CAD geometry including surface modelling related to major castings specifically cylinder heads and blocks using CREO

  • Sound understanding of the requirements of systems that interact with these components such as rotating systems, valve train, lubrication, breather and cooling systems, bolted joint and sealing experience.
Product Design and Development
  • Strong understanding of casting and machining processes related to casting of complex cast iron components.
  • Strong technical background (HNC or technical degree preferred in mechanical or automotive engineering) though other qualifications or experience are equally valued.
Technical Excellence
  • Good understanding of component manufacturing principles & processes.
  • Good understanding of manufacturing assembly principles.
  • Design knowledge of engine & mechanical components and systems.
Managing Multiple Priorities
  • Self‑motivation and ability to manage and deliver tasks to meet established commitments.
Effective Communications
  • Excellent communications skills & teamwork.
  • Collaborate & manage interactions on behalf of Caterpillar with external suppliers to develop design solutions.
Desirable Requirements
  • Knowledge and usage of Team Centre – or similar data management software.
  • Experience of running and participating in FMEA.
  • Experience in component and engine validation & verification.
  • Experience gained in the off‑highway diesel or machine sector.
  • Experience with alternative fuels and spark‑ignited engines.
  • Familiarity with the APQP methodology.
