About the role:

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Finance Business Partner to join Selwyn District Council on a 7-month fixed-term assignment.

This is a high-impact role where you'll work closely with senior leaders and diverse business groups, providing strategic financial insight, analysis, and advice to support informed decision making and strong organisational performance.

As a trusted advisor, you will bridge finance and operations — translating complex financial information into clear, actionable insights that support long‑term planning, budgeting, and sustainable financial management across Council activities.

This role is ideal for a proactive Finance Business Partner who enjoys influencing decisions, driving performance, and partnering with stakeholders in a large, complex organisation.

Key responsibilities:
  • Partner closely with cost centre managers and senior leaders to support evidence-based decision making
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, and meaningful monthly variance analysis
  • Provide strategic and technical financial advice across a wide range of Council activities
  • Deliver high-quality financial reporting, modelling, and performance insights
  • Monitor financial performance, identify risks, and recommend corrective actions
  • Support financial capability by coaching and advising budget holders
  • Maintain and oversee development contributions accounts and charges
  • Coordinate cross-departmental processes, including annual policy reviews
  • Identify and lead improvements to financial systems, processes, and reporting
About you:

You are a confident and commercially astute finance professional who thrives in a business partnering environment. You enjoy working with senior stakeholders, providing constructive challenge, and translating financial data into meaningful insights that support strategic decisions.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Proven experience working within a large, complex organisation with multiple stakeholders
  • Strong management accounting expertise and analytical capability
  • Advanced financial modelling and spread sheeting skills (advanced Excel essential)
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and deliver high‑quality outputs
  • Exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, and integrity
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship‑building skills
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to translate financial data into clear, actionable insights
  • A proactive, solutions‑focused mindset with sound judgement
